1893. After Nate Hallewell investigates the attack on a Whitechapel brothel, he suspects vampires have returned to London.
When his demonic employee is plunged into a coma by a cursed package, Nate learns that his cousin, Josiah, has come to exact revenge on him. With the help of local witches, Nate turns to magic to protect his employees and friends from the onslaught of vampires who are out for their blood.
When Josiah forces his hand, Nate has an impossible decision to make: kill his sadistic cousin, or watch him destroy everyone he cares for.

Having read the Valkerie Rogue series, I was delighted to see that Rosie Wylor-Owen was writing a prequel about Nate! It is the perfect book to read before starting the series, really gives insight into Nate. Nate has to be the sweetest, kindest, nicest vampire to have ever lived, umm, you know what I mean by that! This story centres on Nate's feud with his cousin, Josiah and the life he had prior to appearing in the Valkerie Rogue series. It shows his reasoning, how he wants to protect those he cares about, his affection for Lillian, a witch who was like a mother to him. It shows how loyal all his employees are to him, even after they discover he's a Vampire. Josiah has had it in for Nate for, well, centuries actually, and pulls out all he can to rid himself of Nate. But together with his motley crew of humans, witches and a Valkerie, they manage to thwart Josiah and the attack by his henchmen but not without loss to Nate. This prequel has it all! It's impressive that a prequel can contain so much detail, it feels and read like a fully fledged book. Superb battles and incredible magic are the order of the day but most of all, we get to meet the real Nate, to get a better understanding of him and I totally fell in love with him all over again! Hell, if I didn't know he was taken, I'd be making a beeline straight to him!
This was a great backstory to the rivalry between Nate and Josiah. It was interesting to see the story from Nate's point of view and set in the past just made it even more fun to read. The characters we got introduced to were all fun and I wish we got to see them a bit more, I'm hoping for future mentions in other books in the series. The action was paced well enough that you could follow it, some of the scenes made me laugh out loud. This is a great addition to the series as a whole.
An excellent preview for an upcoming series. Can a vampire have a conscious? Nate had been bitten by his cousin but due to his upbringing had resolved not to take blood from humans but instead received blood from other sources but not o so his cousin Joshua Nate always had to look over his shoulder on the watch for his cousin. However, after having build up a large cider company , Joshua shows up wih help. But Nate also has help but will it be enough. Well worth reading.
Such a good book! This was a great introduction to the characters and world in the Rogue Valkyrie series. I hadn't read any of the series, but now that I have read the prequel, I look forward to the next book in the series! I love the trope of making someone who is traditionally considered a monster into a good person trying to live their lives while doing no damage, which this does very well. An additional bonus is the setting of Victorian England!
A fun and action-packed tale involving Nate, his psycho cousin, and various supernaturals. It’s the origin story of the tombs that are so important in the Valkyrie series.
Who is Florence and why is she so important?
If I hadn’t read the main series first, though, some things wouldn’t have flowed as well (e.g. who is Nate and why is he different in the first chapter).
This was a great short story. I love the idea of witches helping Nate. When Nate learned the vampires were back, he had a choice to make protect his friends or watch them be killed. He chose protecting the people he called friends, that's where the witches come in handy. Now I believe I have another series to read.
An interesting prequel to a new series. If you like supernatural you will enjoy this. An unwilling vampire turned by family and chased through the centuries it tells how the last stand foreseen Mate and his cousin.
The end of the story is set 100 years later and sets the scene for book 1 in the new series.
This is the first book I have read from the author and I actually really enjoyed it. I am aware that some of the characters feature in other books but it was really easy to get to know Nate and learn a little about his backstory. I loved the Sisterhood of the Witches and Nates employees fierce determination to protect him, themselves and all that they had built. I look forward to reading more of Rosie's books in the future.
