Excellent survey of some freaky imagery - psychedelic, surrealist, nightmarish, transcendent, whatever. Old faves like Alex Grey, Brom, and Caniglia make appearances, but the real standouts are from artists new to me like Laurie Lipton, Kris Kuksi, and Oleg Korolev. A very good impulse purchase.

Metamorphosis ist ein englischsprachiger Sammelband über und von verschiedenen Künstlern, die sich vor allem dem Surrealismus verschrieben haben. Jeder Künstler stellt sich in seinem Abschnitt biografisch vor und präsentiert seine Werke. Unter anderem trifft man hier auf Künstler wie Andrew Gonzalez, Jean Delville, Kim Evans, Ernst Fuchs und viele mehr. Das Buch entführt in eine abstrakte, faszinierende, aber auch erschreckende Welt. Die Künstler bedienen sich in den meisten Fällen des menschlichen Körpers. So sieht man hier das Portrait eines Menschen, dessen Gesicht aus vielen menschlichen Hinterteilen besteht. Wir haben viele visuelle Effekte und so manches Bild entfaltet seine Wirkung erst, wenn man länger darauf schaut. Neben der Faszination für das eine oder andere Bild schockieren diese jedoch auch. Die Werke sind verwirrend, gesellschaftskritisch. Es gibt Mut zur Hässlichkeit. Es wird mit Körpern gespielt, es werden Dimensionen aufgetan. Das Buch und seine Werke sind so vielschichtig, dass man sich eigentlich gar nicht satt sehen kann. Man verweilt lang bei den Bilder, betrachtet und analysiert sie. Eine wirklich interessante Mischung. Entdeckt haben wir das Buch übrigens im Australienurlaub, als wir in einem Dorf etwas weiter von Byron Bay waren - eine Hippiekommune, wie es uns schien. Wir waren von den Werken darin so begeistert, dass wir es uns schließlich nach Deutschland bestellt haben. Wer sich an surrealistischen Werken erfreuen kann und sein Auge gern auf Reisen schickt, dem möchte ich dieses Werk wärmstens empfehlen. Es ist immer und immer wieder faszinierend.

A mix of mostly fantasy and surreal art - I was actually surprised by the number of surreal images, but it's there in the subtitle. My favourite pieces were probably the muted acrylic pieces of Peter Gric - dark and with great perspective - along with the hyper-realistic monochromatic grotesquery of Laurie Lipton and eerie sculptures of Tristan Schane.
Surprisingly also the number of references or acknowledgments to religion in the artist notes.
