This was just an okay read - it felt very rushed which meant for half the book I didn't really know what was going on, there was no explanation of how much time had passed and the plot jumped around a whole lot. We were introduced to another realm with no real world building or explanation about any of the terms used there (what was an OV?). It was also really irksome that someone "smirked" at least once on every page and once I noticed this I couldn't stop noticing the use of it everywhere!! I think this has potential and the cover is really great but just needs tightened up a bit.
I received a free review copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest unedited feedback.

What if all you've ever visited was all a plot for you to seek your destiny?

I got into this read without reading the blurb, a very bad but addictive habit of mine, that usually results in interesting reads, as this one!

The premise is something not unique but very interesting in itself! A young girl that finds herself in a new world she doesn't know and with a legend that might influence not only those of this strange world, but everyone in her own world!

First off, there's not much known about the world Sasi finds herself in, since most of everything happens in our own world, but it's a nice reverse of rolls, since usually our main character has to adapt to the new world, while here we see the ones from this new worlds having to adapt to our own, while Sasi guides them.

The reading itself was fine, the story isn't exactly a straight line, but it follows a path that feels a bit random, like the author just chose some places from the top 10 religious sites and pop them into the story. Some feel studied, others feel more forced into the story... Like "oh there's this thing here that reminds me of this back then... Conveniently! *Wink*"

The magi system I believe it needs some more deep thinking, since it all seems so complicated and tough to learn... But then she learns it all super quick! And their companions don't know our world except a few things that are still probably strange to them but that they are completely at ease with... So there are a few inconsistencies around the book...

The characters are nicely presented, I myself am not a fan of Sasi, but I guess it comes with having double her age or close enough... I found her bratty and imature, but it works for the plot!

I read this book in audiobook format on audible, and struggles with it... The actor/reader was always swallowing and stopping mid-sentence, the ponctuation was not great really, and made me feel a bit lost! It all felt a but unprepared to be honest!

But not all is bad! The story is indeed very good, there are tons of religious references, various interestingly described battles, there's a lot you can search and verify the truth of it so it brings the story into our world!

The characters, again, are very interesting and full of personality while having their own perks to find out!

The environment, while mostly on our world, is nicely described and I felt it was easy to place myself inside the story!

I do believe some editing and revision would make this book a lot better, since the soul of it is already in point!

Note: I received a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

After winning a championship basketball game, Sasi finds herself somehow transported to a strange, new realm. When she is discovered there, she is taken to the realm's rulers where she is treated well. She learns about a prophecy and a war that is looming. However, as she explores the castle, she begins to notice things that make her question whether or not she can believe what she's been told. Escaping the castle, Sasi seeks out friends who can help her locate the shards of prophecy. Not only does her search take her back to her own realm on Earth, but it raises questions about just how involved her own mother is in the prophecy.

I enjoyed the story for the most part. It didn't grab hold of me and force me to keep listening, but it was interesting enough that I definitely wanted to find out what would happen next. It is a book that I think teenagers would enjoy reading. The mystery behind the prophecy and Sasi's own connection to it were neat ideas that were handled well. There were also places where I was laughing out loud - particularly when they first arrive back in Sasi's own realm and they discover that not everyone arrived ready to go out in public.

That being said, if you are interested in this book, get the ebook. Do not listen to the audiobook. This was obviously Nanette Gonzalez's first time narrating an audiobook as there were numerous misreadings and mistakes made in the narration. It is also obvious that she did not use a proofer, as they were all things that a proofer would have caught for her to correct before publishing it. In addition, many of the chapters had a low background hum or fuzz that made it difficult to pay attention to the actual story. I ended up having to listen to several chapters twice just to be able to understand what was going on. All in all, listening to the audiobook was just like listening to a live read of the book by someone who has never read a story out loud before.

As a final note, I am giving the review here 4 stars, since it is tied to the Kindle edition and there isn't an Audiobook edition available for me to rate. In my review on Audible, I give it an overall rating of 3 stars, with 1 star for the narration and 4 stars for the story.

Thank you to the author and the publisher, BooksGoSocial, for letting me read this book through NetGalley!

“Where I’m from people often write about magic, or there’s this thing called Harry Potter, where the character had a magic with a wand”

“This place kept getting weirder and weirder, and it was just getting started”

I quite liked this book. The magic system was good and the characters’ storyline kept me interested in the plot itself.
I liked the idea of transport through dimensions and realms and I liked the friendship that blossomed in this book.
I just believe that at the beginning it was a bit rushed. I felt like I was thrown into the action from very early on and then the speed slowed somehow. It’s not necessarily a bad thing … I just believed it could have been better handled. Anyway I was invested in the plot and the story definitely needs to be fully read in order to be understood.
There were even some fun parts I have to say I enjoyed reading, especially when it came to Sasi mastering her powers with the help of her friends.
I feel like this story is yet to be told and I think it has potential.

“Don’t willingly trust so easily. Some people aren’t who they say they are”

“The one that dares to open, shall be met with darkness before light, by the Goddess’s blood”

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I want to admit that this book had promise. The description really caught my eye, and the cover is gorgeous. I really enjoyed the aesthetic aspect of the book.

However, once I started reading the book, it became less and less enjoyable to read. It felt very poorly written. The pacing was fast, but the style of writing made it drag on. The descriptions were poor and repetitive throughout the book. There were portions that made me wonder if an editor had taken a look through the contents at all.

The story was fun, and I believe that there is potential in the author, but this book left a bad taste in my mouth as far as reading it went. Perhaps it is that it felt that it was written more for middle grade rather than young adult that bothered me partially. The age range for the writing level felt more on par with middle grade or even some of the children's books I've read.

I began the book with high hopes. It started interesting with Sasi winning the championship for her school, (university) basketball team. After the game she goes to visit her mom who is a surgeon at the local hospital. Things begin to get strange from here. She makes her way to her "sanctuary", the roof, here a snake launches itself at her and they tumble off the roof of the hospital into a blue light. She isn't hurt, but finds herself in a new world.

Suddenly she is thrown into a world that is full of magic and turmoil. Her journey takes her to new places, making new friends, a few enemies, and self-discovery. I still haven't decided if I really like the book or not. I know some of my students will like it, but I'm definitely going to have to reread it.

I was given the opportunity to read this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Fun and unique worldbuilding. The characters and plot are spun out through the book, and held my interest throughout. Sasi had a steep learning curve, but she handled each new situation, and even an entirely different world, with aplomb as she for her best to figure out the mysterious prophecy. I would have liked spending more time learning the magic of the world, but Sasi figured that out pretty easily.
For the most part, Nanette Gonzales did well with the narration and voices, however there were a few mistakes, and a distracting hum in the background at times.

Overall Celina Marquez wrote a great story in The Serpent's Daughter. It took me a little bit to get into the book but once I got hooked, I got hooked. Celina does a great job developing the main character, the supporting characters, world, and the plot/story. Audio Version: This was my first time listening to Nanette Gonzales and she does a great job with the individual characters and overall story.

I would love to travel based on a theme like these characters did – they went ‘round the world to the holy sites of various religions. My trip would be the collect photos and souvenirs rather than shards…but then again, I’m not on a quest to save the world.

Thanks for the “Sweet Dreams” reference – I sooo needed an Annie fix!

I wanna know where I can get some of that healing Elfroot…

Fave line:
‘I know I’m blind, child, but it doesn't mean I can’t see you.’

I also BETA read the sequel…
