This book can be summed up in the line “understanding the spiritual posture of surrender is a key element to a fulfilling birth.”

I found this book after weeks of discouraging research and conversations that made me feel like hospitals are the place that ignorant, lazy, uneducated, and fearful women go. The bottom line of the book is that many hospital horror stories stem from the mom not knowing what the process is (unknown and unmet expectations), or thought they were ultimately in control (unrealistic and untrue expectations). Finally, in this book, you hear (from a medical professional and mom) that it doesn’t have to be that way.

If you believe God is sovereign, you can go into labor with hopes and desires, but holding them in an open hand, willing to sacrifice your will to the Lord if something other than you want needs to happen instead. It doesn’t mean you go in blindly or without desires, it just means that someone who knows a lot more than you is there by your side if it doesn’t work out. Our goal should be the same as theirs: not to have an insta-worthy birth story that went exactly how we wanted, but to have a healthy baby at the end of it.

This book is a great practical guide for expectant mothers who are looking to deliver in hospital settings. I know plenty of people willing to give pregnancy advice, but I knew very little about the process when you actually go into labor. This book clearly lays out each step from walking in to triage to leaving with your baby, and I’m so grateful for the author’s perspective. She gives a great defense of nurses, and helped me see their role as an ally (not an enemy).

This book is so well written! I am now going to recommend to ANYONE planning to give birth to read this book! It is clear and structured around the concept that we should prepare for birth “in three rhythms: mind, nurse, and spirit.” It includes a healthy combo of insightful hospital procedures from a L&D nurse and biblical connection. This book had me in tears as the author reveals that God is in control and your labor nurse is your chosen guide, saying “you were absolutely chosen for this time and place, to be the mother of the baby inside you.” Surrendering to His plan can not only give you a more positive experience but relieve pain and enhance your unique birth story.

I was so encouraged by this book! I am in my second trimester of pregnancy and I left the book more at peace than when I started. The author gave me a practical knowledge of what to expect in the hospital setting, and prepared my heart as well to be at peace with all that will happen during the birthing process. A must read for mamas looking to give birth in the hospital!

I loved how this book wove spiritual insights into the birth plan. I had quite a few "ah-ha" moments. I also wish this book was around when I was pregnant, haha! But that would have been 25 years ago!! I can't wait to read more from this author.
