Laurent grows up in the wealthy Akapo family in the town of B. in France at the beginning of the 20th century. He plays various creative games with his friend Norbert Couarat (NO) until he finally takes a liking to golf, a sport his father John practices regularly. When World War II begins and the town of B. is occupied by the Germans, Laurent and NO overhear Gestapo agents planning an ambush on the golf course. Laurent's father, who is active in the Resistance, is in danger of being captured if he is not warned in time. NO takes on the task in exchange for 55,555 golf balls lost during the game. Laurent, who learned from his father that a gentleman never goes back on his word, takes his promise very seriously - and begins a life's work.
With "The Lost Last Ball," Jacques Roubaud has written an impressive novella. In short, precise sentences and calm but poetic prose, he tells the story of Laurent Akapo - the boy who keeps his own promise - over the course of several decades. Friendship, loyalty, opportunism and determination are the themes of this moving novella.
Roubaud's narrative is impressive and gripping to the very last page. A beautiful book that is well worth reading!
