Micheal HaDera’s The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below The Line is a shocking insider’s tale about the inner workings of one man’s life inside a major Hollywood production. He details the everyday trials and tribulations of a Hollywood producer assistant in full color, leaving no surprising detail, ridiculous request or scandalous event out, giving the reader insight into the multi-billion-dollar Hollywood machine that they would never find anywhere else. It is a truly unique tale that only someone in the business could provide, and it will leave you shaking your head and looking at the next blockbuster movie you watch through a completely different set of eyes.
“What can I do? What can I do?” was the question I always asked myself, and during the last three difficult years, the same answer always came to me. I always said I would do it “one day.” 🦄🦄🦄 A shocking insider’s tale about the inner workings of one man’s life inside a major Hollywood production. 🦄🦄🦄 The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line is a book based on true events working as an assistant in Hollywood. It chronicles the grueling work and hours put in (and that is expected) in order to keep celebrities and high profile people happy. Because this set in the early 2000s you might think a lot has changed and even though i would expect the industry to be a little less brutal, i highly doubt it. Jackson seems like a regular run off the mill guy who's trying to make his mark while keeping his bosses happy, but you can see the job is draining every last ounce of will that he has. As someone who doesn't really know much about the industry (past or present) it's a big eye opener and it makes you feel sad and angru for those that aren't treated with the respect they deserve (because everyone deserves it)! Wanting to be a Producer is a HUGE deal and yes, Jackson needed to work for it, but reading certain things left me rooting for him to achieve his dream while at the same time wondering if it will be worth it. The books over 400 pages long, but reading Jackson's story was worth every single minute of the hours I spent and I could not put it down. I loved reading this book and if you're someone who's a Hollywood enthusiast I would highly recommend this to you because it's going to open your mind to the realities of Hollywood! 🦄🦄🦄 Rated 10/10 Melina L.
I feel like anybody who has either worked in entertainment or as an assistant will find this book very triggering in a darkly comedic way. Definitely made me see my own Stockholm syndrome from some very awful bosses...
Also recommend for anyone who wants to know what it is actually like working in movies - this is what THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA was for fashion magazines.
The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below The Line is a perfect title for what this story is, with its sharp insight into every aspect of being "below the line" (it's explained in the book, but basically means the "unimportant people") on a Hollywood set —but this memoir-slash-exposé could just as successfully work with an alternate title like An Oral History of The Mess That Was Making [Redacted Film] (I wanna shout from the rooftops about what film this was!!! I wish we could gift this book to everyone who worked on the film just for vindication that their struggle is recorded somewhere and not hidden in the dark forever!)
If you've been seriously into movies —watching them, following the making of them, the business of them, the celebrity drama behind and inside of them— for long enough, and especially if you were of a certain age in the early 2000s, this book can also feel like a flashback into your own life. The memories of being attached to your Blackberry, remembering the arrival of Ugg boots in celeb culture, Dido's "White flag" blasting loudly everywhere, and surveying shelves of DVDs when you first arrive at someone's house will feel familiar and delightful to those of us who lived in the very specific media era of the early 2000s.
But figuring out which movie this book is about is truly THE MOST THRILLING RIDE! Creatively divided into chapter parts according to the film's production schedule, the first half of the book is pretty saturated with details (the author/narrator will often list every single food item offered on the table in front of him, or note every feature of the houses he's looking at renting for his boss) but those details are divine if you're the right kind of reader —one who wants to feel like you are right in the room, eyes fluttering around soaking up every single aspect of every Hollywood moment: What did the top-tier trailers look like inside, what do producers complain to each other about, what is the mood like on set after months of delayed filming, was this beloved actor really as nice as her co-stars say? Our narrator "Jackson" (everyone's names are changed) tells us sooo much more than we could ever ask about —some of it made my jaw actually drop, some of it had my heart rate up with the pure excitement of seeing shiny celebrity things, and a lot of it made me seriously angry.
A lot of the first half is also witnessing Jackson live this harrowing abusive employment situation, where he's being treated as disposable, left without support or guidance, forced to work hideous unpaid hours. It's disgusting and unjust and terrible and horrifying. And yet, he justifies it to himself. Because he wants so desperately to be in Hollywood, and this is the way it goes. The work experience is certainly informative —to be right there, watching the powerful people work, overhearing major secretive conversations— but is it worth it? Jackson asks himself countless times, and he does occasionally get as furious as he should. The emotional ride of Jackson coming into his own in terms of the treatment he'll stand and the strength and confidence he builds is very satisfying. But the narration (as does the industry irl) always brings things back down to earth.
As the story progresses, my googling got more and more energetic, following up on clues hinted at in the book and my existing knowledge of the era. And the more you know about the production, the more invested you become in even the worst characters, and the more SHOCKING this all is. This book could fully have tabloid headlines and readers of pop culture websites like Vulture going feral. If the industry wasn't as evil and toxic and all-powerful as it is, and The Hollywood Assistant could be marketed without the sense of anonymity, I think this could have people going wild with how DELICIOUS the insider stories are. The gossip!!!! But more importantly, in this era of people finally coming out saying how the assistants were treated on the making of The Kardashians show and the Kim K game (calling in sick because they couldn't afford gas to get to the office, or stealing food from Craft Service so they could eat, while the stars just got richer and more famous) and with the [Redacted] movie also having just been released, this is the PERFECT era for this book to come out. Justice for the "lower tiers" of employment in the entertainment industry! Pay these people! Give them rights! And time off! And fair work environments! And promotion opportunities! Give them more credit!
If you're the kind of person who always watched bonus features of DVDs and enjoys film industry gossip, this is the ultimate book for you! It's downright delicious. But also!! If you know anyone who has worked in the industry as an assistant --or wants to!!! Buy them this book immediately and make them sit down to read it right damn now before they make any further steps. Because if there's anything we know about capitalism, and anything we've seen in how Hollywood's been exposed more recently, NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Stay safe out there, kids! I'll be thinking about this book for ages, and referring back to it for the juicy details many times over.
Wow, where do I even start? What a book. From the moment I read the first page I was hooked! We visualize Hollywood as this glamorous place full of movie stars, stiletto heels, champagne and limos! We forget that real people with feelings, families and dreams make up this town! Michael Hadera gives us a beautiful, courageous glimpse of life behind the scenes of a Hollywood production company. Jackson, our main character, has aspirations of being a producer to the big stars! I can almost feel his joy when he accepts a job as an assistant and I can feel his frustration at the hoops he must jump through to not only prove his worth, but keep his job! I can imagine movie stars being demanding, but I would think the producers, directors, light and sound men etc., would be striving towards one goal and be willing to work together. Jackson shows us that is not the case. From picking up coffee, dry cleaning, taking care of dogs, moving his boss, fixing lunches and even delivery a sweater while taking care of every aspect of paperwork regarding the movie, Jackson shows us how useful assistants are, and how demeaning their superiors can be! And, just like normal bosses, some superiors continuously set their employees up to fail. I could not put this book down because I wanted to see what insane task Jackson's superiors set before him and how he would show them he was up for the task Like a true hero in any movie, Jackson prevailed! In the end, Jackson sees he is worthy of so much more than what he has endured. And, he proves his worth no only to his superiors, but more importantly, to himself. I wish there was a sequel, because frankly, I am not ready to say goodbye to Jackson yet.
Michael Hadera shows real insight about the inside world of Hollywood. The characters in the book are believable and life-like; I felt like I really knew Doug and Kathryn by the end of the book, and I was just as sad as Jackson was about having to go in a different direction than the two of them. All of the characters that Jackson came across while working on his first movie were just as ludicrous as I would imagine Hollywood executives to be. All of the anecdotes throughout the book were hilarious, lifelike, and interesting.
The actresses and producer that Jackson had to work with were equally preposterous. From the drug-binging parties, to the drunken rages, I was entertained. My entertainment was due from shock that this is actually how these people act on a daily basis. I couldn’t believe that this is really how people in this world act. Reading this book was like watching a reality show the entire time. Just like Jackson, I frequently found myself asking the question: “Was all of this really worth it?” I guess that this is a question that everybody in the industry has to ask themselves at some point, and that is not really something that the general public usually thinks about. Usually, the general public only thinks about the good parts of being in the industry; not the 16 hour days or the 6-day weeks.
This was a highly enjoyable book. I felt like I was watching a reality TV show the entire time, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a quick-moving, entertaining read.
While publications like People and Variety will detail the goings-on of Hollywood's well-known people, there is little in the way of information regarding people like Jackson, people who live "Life Below The Line." "Making-of" documentaries only somewhat detail the stresses involved in the production of a motion picture, and even then tend to focus on the experiences of people 'Above the line'. What is refreshing about this book is how it details all the seemingly invisible parts and people that have to move in conjunction to get a project off the ground. In many ways, life below the line is much like several jobs, replete with the interpersonal friction that tends to occur.
The story follows the author's trials and tribulations through the production of a single feature film. There is a brief backstory that illustrates his upbringing, with most of his personality coming to bloom throughout the narrative. At his worst, we see Jackson overcome with fear and loathing, convinced that he will lose his job and dream; at his best, we see him overcome adversity and showcase how capable he truly is. All told, even through the pain he endured, the book closes on a relatively positive and uplifting note.
Whew, what a read! I think the key thing about this book is the authentic take on Hollywood. When we sit at home watching movies and television shows we have this idealistic, romanticized take on what happens behind the scenes in Hollywood. Oftentimes, I feel like we have no idea what (and who) goes into making huge successes in Hollywood, which is what this book highlights through well-planned character development. Hadera has created a relatable and noteworthy lead named Jackson to show, rather than just tell, the struggles and professional hunger often unseen in Hollywood.
I was so clearly able to relate to Jackson, though never setting foot in Hollywood. Hadera presents readers with trials and nuances of Jackson's errand-running and his struggles with his boss in a way that strips Hollywood of glamour and inserts grit. I was able to feel when Jackson was frustrated with proving himself, something I've felt recently at work.
I think Hadera does a wonderful job of gripping the readers with painting a main character that is not only relatable, but one that will remain in our thoughts during daily work trials.
Robert Greene said that he wrote “The 48 Laws of Power” as a hate letter for Hollywood, and I was curious to what happens and how people act in this world?
As an ambitious young guy who is looking to launch his career and dreams of producing one day, Micheal HaDera started an assistant in Hollywood in a very famous movie, working under very well-known people in the field. Micheal then shares his personal experience.
In this memoir, you will walk in Micheal’s shoes and experience the life of an assistant in Hollywood. It can sound like a dream job, but in this world, while your daily tasks can be dirty, scary, disturbing, and downright disgusting, that’s what it takes to excel.
Although this book is mainly to describe Micheal’s journey as an assistant, it also holds a lot of valuable life lessons. From Micheal’s encounters and personal and professional relationships, you will see the world from a new perspective, a realistic one. One of the lessons is perseverance, and let me tell you, his perseverance is very inspiring. Imagine having to do unbelievable tasks way past your pay grade, working an insane amount of hours sometimes even 24 hrs straight, and then even being asked to work for free not to mention the vicious people he had to deal with.
This book is easily one of the most enjoyable books I have read. It is a book that I consider buying as a book gift to anyone. The storytelling is fabulous, you’re always curious to see what happens next.
I have been lucky enough to enjoy The Hollywood Assistant by Michael Hadera. The book is a first-person narrative telling of the authors first major project in the Hollywood film industry. This book quickly caught my attention as I found myself always wanting to know what each new day held in store for the author. The layout has a nice flow, I found it effortless to follow along with the many unbelievable tasks that he was given. It is written in such a way that it draws out true emotion from the reader, from laughs to anxiety, this book will keep you entertained. I recommend The Hollywood Assistant; it was a pleasure to read and I look forward to future works by Mr. Hadera.
'The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line' is a riveting tell-all by Micheal Hadera which follows the life of “Jackson" as he works ‘below the line’ in the production of a Hollywood movie. 'Below the line' is an industry term that refers to people in the making of a Hollywood movie who are not the cast, producers, directors or other “important “ people. It can usually refer to department heads, their teams and other personnel like Jackson who is an assistant to the producers.
The book, 'The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line' is a memoir of sorts or what I would call, a true story book. Names have been changed (I found Jackson to be such a hilarious and witty choice because Micheal Jackson? In this case, it's the same person but different? Brilliant choice). The real name of the movie referenced in the book is redacted but oh the tales my Google search history would tell if it could. The only disappointment I would register about this book is... in myself for my inability to decode which movie the author is referring to.
“You will never forget your first movie", Jackson is told. Forget? Forget he does not and will not because the author, Micheal goes on to write an entire book about his first movie detailing everything you can possibly imagine he is privy to during his role as an assistant to the producers at all stages; from pre- production to wrap of a Hollywood movie. He gives us an inside scoop on everything. I’m talking budget, expenditure, fun facts about the writing process, celebrity demands, cabins, glamour, lifestyle, spontaneous travel, jets, workplace drama and so much more. All the tea. The good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. This book is the Behind The Scenes of the Behind The Scenes (what is generally showcased to the public on television as the production process). If you have any expectations going into this book, best believe it over-delivers.
Something that is going to stay with me about Jackson in particular, is his work ethic. From starting out not knowing anything to knowing everything, working twice as hard as the big names he was working for and always finding a way when he was presented with impossible challenges. Micheal is a on the otherhand, is a star writer. He makes such vivid descriptions throughout the book. A quality that took me on an emotional rollercoaster especially with Jackson’s parts as he navigated his demanding role in a cutthroat workplace. I ordered many venti lattes at Starbucks, had my heart in my mouth when Jackson was in highly anxiety- inducing situations, felt his fatigue to my bones and could almost touch Jackson's joy when he was gifted a coat alongside his first compliment from his bosses to boot. All as a result of the author's writing prowess.
I was not particularly a fan of the “foreword" for several reasons such as the fact that I share the opinion that it should not be called a foreword if it is the writer's own account of his story/ written in their voice. Perhaps a preface or prologue would be more fitting as a title. I also felt that the way in which it was written does not give the book a proper introduction (which can make or break a book). The information therein felt like too much at once and did not give me enough context for the overall story or about the author. It was just difficult to place. As well, it isn't depictive of the author's true writing ability as evidenced later in the book. I however urge readers to exercise patience in the beginning. The book turned out to be an easy read that took me 3 days to get through. In line with the pace which starts slow, takes off shortly after and slows down at the end. You risk losing your life to Micheal's. Sorry, Jackson’s from how captivating this book is. Just as his is lost to Doug’s and Kathryn's in his role. The aftermath of reading the book for me, has felt like coming down from a drug high and wondering what to do next with my life. You know a book is good when it gives you that effect.
Speaking of Doug and Kathryn, this book gave me ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ vibes-but make it about the Hollywood movie-making industry. With Kathryn in this real life recount starring as Miranda. The work environment is just as fast-paced and cutthroat as the movie in a way that left me occasionally gasping for breath on Jackson's behalf at times and also challenging me to cultivate not just Jackson's work ethic but Doug's and Kathryn's. Not forgetting that I was literally gloating over their lifestyles.
I think that The Hollywood Assistant, Life Below the Line is an underrated body of work that deserves to get in the hands of more people. Moving forward, I will be watching Hollywood movies with a very different set of eyes and a deeper perspective about the movie-making process and business. I would recommend this book and purchase it as a gift for people who enjoy Hollywood movies, those who love celebrity culture, celeb gossip and students pursuing movie or film production/journalism/ theatre/arts and media studies or any such course. I can't help but think how Micheal provided such an eye-opening and inspiring read for aspiring/newbie/ongoing assistants of all kinds (not just Hollywood but VAs and administrative assistants alike) on how to stay on top of their game. I look forward to a day TikTok conspiracy theorists get onto this read and decode the changed names and movie title for those who like myself struggled to take hints. Ultimately, it is my hope that the book gains its much deserved buzz and traction in reading and Hollywood spaces. Similar to how books authored by “above the line" Hollywood stars do.
Reader discretion is advised. The book contains graphic sexual details and party scenes where alcohol and drug use are involved.
As a lover of both film and celebrity gossip, The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line grabbed my attention with the book’s description. Going into it I expected to find the story of an overworked and underpaid industry professional. I was frequently shocked by Jackson’s treatment, though. The author was able to illustrate the chaos Jackson endured. Beyond that, readers get a glimpse of what a mess film production can be and how unprepared highly paid executives seem to be at times.
The story was well written and held my attention throughout for the most part. The play by play that is required to understand what Jackson is going through did get a little mundane at times, but it was never long before something off the wall would happen. I also feel that the reader would not understand what his workday is like if it had been written in any other way.
It is easy to hate Doug and Kathryn as you read about Jackson racing from one task to the next only to be met with disapproval and degradation. He asks Doug what he needs to know to do his job well and Doug unhelpfully replies “everything.” It’s clear as the book continues that Doug wasn’t kidding. Jackson is expected to know everything and whatever he doesn’t know he should be able to learn without asking Doug or Kathryn. There’s no recognition for a job well-done, either. Amazingly, Jackson is still able to find the silver lining to his experience.
It was hard not to be surprised by the overall mood during the film’s wrap and Jackson’s ability to not become bitter towards the industry makes it easier to continue supporting the film industry. Thanks to the insight provided I will have a new appreciation for what’s going on behind the scenes. I think that recognition is something all the Jackson’s of Hollywood deserve.
Michael HaDera brings to life the true behind the scenes of a movie production set in his book The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line. The main character, Jackson, is a personal assistant for a big shot movie producer and is working his first full-time position in the film industry. He recounts long, grueling hours both in the office and on set of the production. As a recent college graduate living in Vancouver, Jackson struggles with the “Hollywood Land” pressure of needing things done now and without questions. Despite it all, Jackson’s passion for the film industry and desire to learn everything he can keeps him from quitting his high stakes, high pressure job.
As someone who grew up in the suburbs of Hollywood, I was expecting more of a scandalous inside look at a movie set. Instead, the book mostly focuses on the office life of constant meetings, phone calls, and emails before and during the filming of a movie. I did find the book an interesting personal story about Jackson’s first experience on a movie set. Jackson is fascinated with everything about the rich and famous, from what they drive to how they eat. HaDera’s writing is easy to read and conveys Jackson’s stress and anxiety well. I had flashbacks of rough days and difficult co-workers in my early work experience (would not recommend as an after work, de-stress read). It was enjoyable to watch Jackson’s character growth as he learned to be less emotionally invested in his job and have a professional handle on different situations.
I would recommend this book as a beach read or a vacation read. It is a light read with lots of fun descriptions of food, fashion, and the daily schedule of a movie set.
Content warning for those concerned with alcoholism, excessive smoking, drug addiction, eating disorders, and workplace harassment.
The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below The Line written by Micheal HaDera is a true-to-life insider's experience working on a major Hollywood production. He did an impeccable job protecting the confidentiality of the others involved while still providing a thorough accounting of his life as a producers assistant. The good, the bad, the ugly...and the shocking. The beginning starts with a man with a dream. Stepping in to the film industry is extremely difficult. It quickly transcends to the dog eat dog, back stabbing, and manipulative world that is filled with a high anxiety, betrayal, stress, and heart ache, but also filled with excessive high expectations to perform. Not as an actor performs, it's a work performance that exceeds what society would consider normal. Above what society would consider acceptable. From Starbucks addictions to cocaine, from the life of the party to the lowest man on the totem pole, from being targeted by a another member and subjected to malicious cruelty. The reader is lured into the world of Hollywood and left consistently shaking their heads wondering what the heck could possible happen next. I assure you, what happens next is worse than what was. The saddest part of all, is that millions are chasing entrance into this world, from directing, producing, screenwriting, being an assistant, or a member of cast and crew, and some have no idea, in fact, most likely have no idea, the chaos they will be stepping into. It's a turbulent ride told from a man who walked the walk, talked the talk, gained entrance, and is seeking a happier life in other avenues.
While an entertaining story, it is the experiences of one man who stepped into the tempestuous world of disorder, the disillusioned, the top of the top, the low of the low, the unethical, the addicted, the insane. This is highly recommended as a page turner that is difficult to put down.
Anyone who’s worked in any pocket of film - but especially as an assistant in some respect - will be able to see some of themselves in Jackson. The author has captured the hot and cold nature of working in the industry very well. By the time is all and said and done, one of the least insane parts is the fame and glamour, (not when you compare it to all the drama that happens behind the scenes). Hundreds of names show up in the credits of any movie you’ve ever watched, and this book is for a lot of those names. But even if you haven’t worked in film, the dialogue-focused, quick-plot is a unique inside look to the reality of what happens in film production. It’s hard not to sympathize and root for the main character, frankly, and his evolution isn’t glamorized - it makes sense. If you’re someone who likes to read a book for compelling, honest, true-to-life, imperfect characters, that was for me the novel’s biggest appeal. I also appreciated the fact the author doesn’t tell you what he wants you to perceive Jackson as (there’s nothing worse than when an author says a character is something and shows them to be something else. For instance, “Oh, the character is so loyal! Everyone praises them for their loyalty.” And the character MULTIPLE TIMES acts without loyalty throughout the novel. It ruins the book for me). Micheal SHOWS you who Jackson is through his internal dialogue, words, and actions (which, once again, are highly relatable for anyone who’s ever been a young professional, full of potential, stuck in an assistant level position!). I don’t want to spoil anything, but you really feel like you’ve gotten to know the protagonist by the end of the book, and I enjoyed getting to know him. I hope other people read this and appreciate the next film they watch that much more, and I’m glad the author took the plunge into writing to talk about his experience!

The Hollywood Assistant by Michael HaDera tells the story of Jackson, an aspiring producer working as an assistant for his first big Hollywood gig. The story is based on events experienced by the author, but with names changed for his legal protection. Once I started this novel, I couldn’t put it down! When we think about Hollywood, most of us view the city through rose-colored glasses. The Hollywood Assistant manages to depict life working in film, and throughout the novel, he portrays the events with all of the drama and emotional turmoil we expect of Hollywood. The book reads more like a reality show than a traditional novel. I found myself really invested in the drama of this retelling of Michael’s life. The inside scoop from Jackson’s perspective deglamorized the world of film, and instead, we find ourselves questioning the morality of some of these “characters” as they interact with Jackson. I found myself deeply invested in Jackson’s story and sympathetic to his plights. He was the picture-perfect assistant, and no matter how hard-working he was, there was always something more he could do. I related to this idea and the harsh reality of making your dreams come true. Jackson struggles with this concept throughout the novel, but at the end of the day, he’s only human, and there is only so much he can handle. The constant influx of tasks, more convoluted and complicated than the last, is enough to burn anyone out. Even though this is a story about working in Hollywood, the lessons Jackson learns can carry over to almost any situation where the odds are stacked against you. In the end, Jackson came out of this story as the hero, and one I’d happily root for again.
Wow, this was a really great read on what it is like working in the life as an assistant producer in Hollywood. Once I started reading, I couldn’t get enough and finished it in nearly two days. Michael HaDera really shows what it is like behind the scenes working on a movie production set. The story is all set around the main character, Jackson who is a personal assistant for a big-time movie producer. Jackson moved to Hollywood as a recent college graduate out of Vancouver and has a hard time adapting to the pressures of the Hollywood lifestyle. Although the job comes with immense amounts of pressure and stress, Jackson decides to keep pushing forward and pursuing his passion to become something within the film industry.
I have never lived in Hollywood myself but I’ve always heard of the crazy and fast paced lifestyle and work environments that people have to endure while living there. This book really does well of showcasing the struggle of all the day-to-day duties that Jackson had to juggle while working in the office as an assistant. HaDera did a fantastic job of keeping the book easy to read and follow along with, but making sure that you feel the different stresses and struggles that Jackson had to go through on this journey. This was such a good read that it even felt like it could be turned into a movie. 10/10 would definitely recommend to my book reading friends!
This book follows Jackson's journey, navigating through the twists and turns of a Hollywood assistant. As you're reading through the pages, it's as if you are experiencing the journey with him. Some of the recounts will make even the most ambitious and starstruck rethink their dream of taking on a career in the entertainment industry.
I really love reading books that are an account of the author's experience. Throughout the pages, I experienced the emotions that Jackson conveyed. I became furious when he was treated unjustly and was undervalued. I felt let down when his work wasn't appreciated. The small joys that he experienced brought a smile to my face.
It's amazing how beautiful films can come out of the chaos that goes on behind the scenes. Between the unpaid working hours and the blatant disrespect, I'm amazed that Jackson lasted as long as he did. Having to deal with the ever-changing temperament of his superiors and then dealing with the ups and downs of having a social life, took its toll.
I would definitely recommend reading this story, especially to those who dream of working in Hollywood.
Hadera recounts an incredible real-life tale of perseverance that makes me question if I have ever truly been committed to anything in my life. Between impossible actresses making psychic predictions on set and a director high enough to commit crude sexual acts in front of the crew, Hadera describes what it is really like behind the scenes.
The protagonist, Jackson, starts off full of energy and naive to his new position as personal assistant to two hardened Hollywood Producers that seem determined to see him fail. Working long days with difficult coworkers Jackson learns the ropes as quickly as possible, to the detriment of his health and self-esteem. Relying on his close friend T for advice and an impossible amount of Starbucks, Jackson makes it through his first film production. One he will never forget.
In a darker version of The Devil Wears Prada, Hadera captures the spirit of every one of us starting out in their dream career only to be quickly disillusioned. Hadera’s fast paced writing style and witty commentary kept me hooked and turning the pages for more. I will never look at the movies the same.
This book is a page-turner and I couldn’t put it down. Even though it’s not my type of biography, in that it’s sensationalist versus inspirational, it kept my interest until the end. The main character starts out as a Hollywood assistant in an A-list film and is way in over his head. He learns fast and impresses his demanding bosses, and gets a fast track into life on a movie set, with much of it filled with immature, degenerate, horrible personalities. I’ll be honest— what really kept me reading was my curiosity about exactly which movie he was referencing… and when I figured it out, it made last half so fun to read!! It’s just astounding to me how starkly different public image is from reality. And that’s what makes this a good story. The way it’s written, it’s almost as if the author went home every day and journaled his experiences, because he details what people were wearing, the expressions and tone with which they talked, and walks us through daily life as a producer’s assistant. He does end up asking “Is it worth it?” to which I’d definitely say no lol. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about what life is like on a Hollywood movie set.
The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line is a fascinating tale of a world most of us never see. The author provides an insider's account of being an 'unimportant' person in the movie production business. We, as the public, see the movies that are produced, but we never really see the people and the processes behind those movies. Even 'behind the scenes' looks don't provide the kind of transparency that this book does.
Through the author's eyes, we see the blatant self-interest that, if this account is anything to go on, seems to dominate this industry. We see the disconnect between the people who live in that world and the 'real world' that 'ordinary' people live in.
It's easy to imagine the glitz and glamour, the money and lavishness enjoyed by the people in the world of movie making. What's not apparent is the desperation, the pressure, and the ruthlessness in the industry. At times the story is funny, while at other times it is shocking and even appalling. It's a must read for anyone who wants a real behind-the-scenes look at American movie making.
Having grown up in Los Angeles and knowing a little bit about Hollywood, I was excited to give The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below The Line a read. Micheal did an amazing job bringing this story to life. From Jackson’s desperation to get his assistant job, the various “tests” that Doug and Kathryn put him through, to the innovative and creative ways he came up with to pass those “tests”. Jackson showed his determination and dedication in working towards his dream job as a producer. No matter how rough of a go he was having on the job, he didn’t let it keep him down.
Having the view point of an assistant who was always around yet also having to be “invisible” gave great insight into what can go on (and wrong) during the production of a feature film.
The flow of the story as well as some of the suspense of what was going to happen next kept me hooked throughout the entire book.
I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you enjoy Hollywood stories and learning how things work behind the scenes of all those movies we love to watch.
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I finished it within a day and was left desperately wanting to know more details about the author's experience.
He successfully brought to life all of the people he worked with, their personalities and moods, and the intense feelings he felt throughout. It was a roller-coaster of a ride, and it was astounding to learn what it takes to create a film. I felt angry for him when he was mistreated, elated when he did something right, and relieved when the film wrapped and he finished. It was a whirlwind read, so much so that I'm planning to read it all over again once I've let it all sink in! It was incredible to see his growth throughout, from being inexperienced to knowledgeable and strong enough to stand up for himself against his colleagues.
An absolute must-read.

This book is an incredible inside scoop on all things Hollywood. From demanding bosses to dramatic leading ladies, this book gives the readers a real-life look into the ins and outs of movie production by following Jackson throughout his time working as an assistant in LA.
When I first read the description of the book, I was expecting a traditional Hollywood expose, but once I began reading, what I found was so much more than your usual tabloid may feature. The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below the Line breaks the mold of tell-all narratives and, instead, provides a nuanced, in-depth, and genuine portrayal of the reality of Hollywood in a way I did not expect. By the time I finished the book, I felt I knew Jackson and, although I've never been in his position, I feel we can all take a lot from his story and resilience. The Hollywood Assistant is a must read!
True story books have always intrigued me. There's just something about it being real that I can appreciate and that captivates me. The Hollywood Assistant: Life Below The Line was no exception, I was hooked from page one. We all watch and admire Hollywood movies and the glamour that comes with it, but behind the scenes is a totally different story. Jackson's story is definitely an eye-opener, and man oh man did he have some serious patience! I would have walked out, or punched someone within the first week lol. There a saying something along the lines of "Throw them in the deep end, and they will either sink or swim." Well, Jackson learned to swim and not only swim, but swim with sharks! I found myself literally cheering Jackson on every time he succeeded at one of the over the top ridiculous, almost impossible tasks handed down to him by the higher-ups. Every job has that one employee, that high and mighty, mean and manipulate, power-hungry suck-up. Well, Jackson, your Ursula "The Sea Witch" took the freakin' cake!!!! I absolutely loved Jacksons ride at breakneck speeds into the world of Hollywood. I don't want to give too much away, this is a story that must be read yourself. It was very well put together, the style and flow of writing was fantastic, and I hope the author Michael continues his writing journey. Shout out to his Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Bonnie Knoll for inspiring his passion for writing. Cheers to my fellow Canadian! Five fabulous stars!!
I am not normally an autobiographical reader, but I very much enjoyed reading this book. The details put into describing everything from the clothing of the early 2000’s, to what a normal day in the life of a below the line assistant would be doing was great.
I will say, I felt a bit bad with how little recognition the authors contribution to the daily running of things was. But it gave a very different viewpoint of the film industry, than the glitz and glamour that you see as an outsider.
Thus, if you are looking for a low dog on the totem pole viewpoint of what you can expect trying to get into the back end of the film industry, this book is for you. First jobs always stink, but this writer did a great job of adding flair to what I would consider a terrible job.
This book definitely starts with an emotional bang. The demands and expectations exposed will shock you. The ups and downs of this story portrays a Hollywood that some might not think about. Emotionally gripping and heart wrenching from the prologue it shines a light on an industry that isn’t all the glamour and gold it makes out to me. Great story telling. Michael’s writing was engaging and told a story that is intriguing and provides an insight into the intensity of the situations and the frenetic work pace and space. Shedding light on the personalities that govern the movie world you will be dying to work out who each person is and who is involved in this production. The Hollywood Assistant is everything you think and more.
this book was perfect for a hollywood drama loving girl like me. i’ve always loved tell all stories about being an assistant in these big industries, and hearing what people get away with astonished me everytime.
Michael HaDera wrote an incredibly immersive novel about his time as an assistant on his first film, and it filled me with anxiety and stress like it was my first job. i had nightmares of phone calls, missing cast members, and nightmare neighbors. i think all the stress i felt is just a testament of his writing and i’m very happy the film is wrapped and i can rest.
I worked for 6 years for well known, very successful producers. This book brought so many memories back. The accuracy of scrambling to fulfill the absolute dumbest requests; the terror of transferring a phone call on an unknown phone system; the need to know everything all of the time and be many steps ahead of everyone…all of these were accurately reflected. The drive necessary to successfully navigate this world is well conveyed. I liked how the author broke up the book into three sections. This industry is brutal, and Micheal did an excellent job conveying that brutality.
The Hollywood Assistant is a great book! Imagining the behind the scenes was fascinating. Once you start to read you cannot stop. The short sentences and chapters really add to the quick environment described by the main character. As it is a true story, the fast pace also makes it feel daily and intimate. Although, some parts could have used some more development as I would have liked more insight on what he was thinking and feeling. Jackson is a very likable main protagonist which makes him easy to like and you find yourself rooting for him as he faces the tough challenges of the industry.
Well written and very vivid story of how brutal this business can be. This determined young man shows the huge disparity between the people at the very top and all the many people behind them that make the film possible. It made me happy that the writers and actors strike moved some issues and attention to support for those that are not too of the call sheet.
