Trauma at the Border is a true story of resilience in the face of devastating pain, a journey of fear, faith, hope, and love in the midst of unforeseen obstacles. When they were told nothing, more could be done for her husband's stage 4 brain cancer, Bernadette refused to accept that. Going beyond conventional medicine to treat her husband, she sought and found alternative treatments in Tijuana, Mexico. This book not only details the search and determination to find answers to incorporate both conventional and alternative cancer treatments, but also tells an unimaginable story of corruption, drug trafficking, strength, and, ultimately, peace. Bernadette never dreamed of or was prepared for the "What ifs." What she did learn along this road is that while fear is the absence of hope, hope is the presence of love.
I know the author, so doing any review makes me uncomfortable - need to say that up front. Given that, the book is an easy, quick read. Quite a few photos which definitely do help the story. I believe that the title is somewhat misleading, almost click-bait. Yes, there is an event at the border, one that would certainly 'throw' any of us, yet this book is truly about the author's husband, his major health issues, and choices about 'alternative' treatments not readily available in the USA. It's a story of love and grief, IMHO, and seeking alternative solutions when told that no other more traditional ones exist. Also, it is heavily laden with an exceptionally strong belief in Catholicism - which is perfectly fine, just something to be aware of...I got the sense that the author was unsure whether to write this book, for many reasons? There is a story here - but maybe not a full book?
