As an entry-level broadcast journalist in 1968, stubborn and strong-willed Becca Schmidt has been working behind the scenes to cover the war. When she meets Jesse Wanger, her immediate attraction to him rocks her to the core. Jesse is just as taken with the raven-haired beauty but is hiding a painful past that has taught him to keep those he cares about at arm's length. Despite a world full of uncertainty, the Vietnam draft hovering, and the always complicated nature of romance-Jesse and Becca continue to be irresistibly drawn together. But they both must fight inner demons and real-world obstacles to find their way to each other.
Kelli brought a story to page that made me smell the stale smoke in the air, taste the grit from the streets in my teeth, and feel the poly fabrics of a lost but highly emulated generation.
She also wove a love story into one of the most complicated ages our young country has endured. For What It’s Worth makes surprisingly realistic and hauntingly understandable the conflicting perspectives that lived side by side, on almost every front of our society during the Vietnam conflict.
She also ticked me off, because she made me jump to the back to read the ending! Something I loth to do, but I had to assuage my journey and prepare my empathy for her quickly beloved protagonists.
Well written in it’s freedom of perspective, Kelli allowed the story to become it’s own person for us to see and respect right along with her well developed characters. It’s as if the rebelliously organic flow of the storytelling masterfully reflects the free love mantra of the age.
I certainly laughed, cried, and struggled right along the sometimes uncomfortable emotional waters. It was easy to do with the depth and timing of Kelli’s character revelations, truly they are fantastic. The well driven romantic scenes also have a satisfying flare, while being gently balanced in a pure light of real life coupled together with the heartbreaking realities of love and war.
Highly recommend this book! Snag it up, as this book will make a wonderful vacation or summer poolside read for anyone who loves historical romances.
And for anyone who has relatives or elders that they dearly love, who endured the turmoil of this era, this is surely an offering and homage of peace to their journey.
During a chaotic, frightening time in our country, this book shows that true love can indeed withstand all. Stammen provides an amazing interpretation of not only the front lines of Vietnam but the family and friends standing strong on the home front. If you are looking for a novel full of love and friendship, this is the book for you!
