"She's actually a woman. She just presents herself as a male in her profile pic and author notes. ;-) I had to confirm with Japan myself. :-D " - Jennifer LeBlanc, SuBLime editor
SIDE:A Smells Like Green Spirit 1 / スメルズライクグリーンスピリット
I have a bad feeling about this manga. I feel like it's going to be one with a really disturbing and "messed up" story.
This is a spin-off from the manga Smells Like Green Spirit, focusing on Yanagida's life after the harassment incident he was involved in. Here, we see Yanagida surviving by moving from place to place with no real direction. His only plan is to keep living until his savings run out, and then he'll end his life. But that changes when he meets Nagisa, a third-year high school student.
Just from the genre alone, you can tell this isn't a manga you can read without being mindful of your mental state. Like I mentioned before, the story is very disturbing and kind of twisted, and I’m pretty sure the intensity will only ramp up in future volumes.
Also, this manga can't be easily categorized as just Boys Love or yaoi because the story is way more complex, dealing with serious issues that could be deeply analyzed.
Rating this manga is tricky for me. If Yanagida didn’t have such a disgusting history in the main story, I might’ve tried to understand his journey. But remembering what he did before—abusing his role as an adult and a teacher—it just makes me sick.
