Talkin' to You, Bro!: Liberate your mind from the confusing, ambiguous messages of contemporary masculinity

Rate this book
What does it mean to be a good man? How can I break free from an outdated conception of manhood that only holds me back? Talkin’ to You, Bro! is an approachable, intelligent, and honest collection of essays about modern masculinity and what it means to be a good man in the 21st century. These essays cover the important, changing narrative of what masculinity is, breaking free from antiquated, harmful notions of toxic masculinity and embracing genuine, empathetic manhood. Dr. Elwood Watson answers some of the most important questions men have about their lives and how they fit into our world’s confusing and sometimes harmful definition of masculinity. Watson uncovers why men think the way they do about masculinity and how that guides the way they act. He shows you how changing men’s conceptions of masculinity can pave the way for an enlightened, compassionate, and new perception of what it means to be a good man in our society. This essay collection provides a new outlook on manhood. Talkin’ To You, Bro! covers all aspects of men’s lives, from work, to relationships, to the power of self-care. Men deserve the freedom to break away from toxic masculinity and be honest about the way they feel. In this book, you’ll learn why our society’s ideas of masculinity are outdated and harmful to men, why it is important to change the way you think about masculinity, and the path forward you can take to transform and live authentically, embracing a healthy and positive masculinity.

*************** Dr. Elwood Watson is a Professor of History, Gender Studies, and African American Studies at East Tennessee State University. His previous publications include Keepin' It Essays on Race in Contemporary America (University of Chicago Press. 2019), many book chapters, journal articles, and conference presentations. “Elwood Watson’s Talkin’ to You, Bro! offers a funny, sharp, and provocative take on a pressing masculinity in the twenty-first century-- the challenges men face and the pathologies that afflict them. What is especially refreshing about Watson’s books is his willingness to address men directly in order to inspire change. Without minimizing the problem of toxic masculinity, his book wagers that the best strategy for mitigating its harmful effects is to offer men guidance, to encourage them to abandon the ‘manly’ behaviours that prevent them from leading happy lives, developing healthy relationships, or making a positive contribution to society.” -- Timothy Aubry, Ph.D. Professor of English, Baruch College “What makes Talkin’ to You, Bro! So profound is that it covers topics relevant to ALL men, irrespective of race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or any other factors that have been traditionally used to separate men. I highly recommend this to any man looking to better himself, the quality of his relationships, and his overall satisfaction with life. You’ll learn a lot from Dr. Elwood Watson’s straightforward approach and, more importantly, walk away as a better version of yourself, ready to engage in robust conversations with other guys looking to change the narrative on what it means to be a quality man in our ever-changing world.” -- Paul Marsh

"Watson’s latest book lends itself to a necessary conversation from the unique viewpoint of a Black male historian of Generation X who is a syndicated columnist, commentator, and subject matter expert on gender and cultural issues. All audiences can benefit from Watson’s astute analysis and important insights on sexuality and popular culture. He deftly chronicles topics surrounding masculinity and manhood in contemporary society with a no-holds-barred approach, which provides much-needed transparency in today’s overly saturated Information Age."
