Have you ever wanted to understand where your family comes from and how you got this way? When Pigeon Pea has a million questions about their family, Auntie gives them the magic key to go back in time and across continents to meet, celebrate, and feast with their ancestors and orisha.
The art is SO GOOD. I Loved Pigeon Pea's journey through their history, and aside from being validating on a number of LGBTQIA+ levels, I can only imagine how meaningful and healing this story will be to African-American children (and parents) who may have little to no information about their family tree as the result of the Transatlantic slave trade. Pigeon Pea is able to reach back in time to connect not only with their ancestors, but with the orishas. All of that was wonderful. I did, however, find the forced rhyme and meter somewhat painful.
There's a lot of joy in this book. I hope more people find it. *old person voice* Kids these days have it good with all these wonderful picture books!
