HOW DO YOU TELL THE WORLD YOU'RE NOT WHO THEY THINK YOU ARE?
Raised in a rigid Christian home, Sarah Igwe nurses a growing distaste for the church and every religious shackle that has hedged her in. Finally, her escape comes when she is admitted into the University of Uyo and she begins shedding off her religious skin. However, her plans meet a bulwark when she starts falling in love with the passionate Jesus freak, Declan Kalu. Now, she is caught in a dilemma between choosing Declan and the very faith she has come to despise or walking away from both to a freedom enshrouded in regret…
Young, principled Christian paradigm, Titi Edet weaves a spotless life amidst a generation teeming with darkness. One single experience brings all she has built crashing down. She must now decide whether to lose everyone's regard for her, or to live a lie henceforth… Declan Kalu revers Titi Edet, who unlocks him into a deep relationship with God, separating him from his past life of immorality. Now his budding friendship (and chemistry) with Sarah threatens to suck him back into the very desires and lifestyle he's been saved from. Can he break free from the stronghold of his past without losing Sarah's soul to darkness?
I was reading Growing Up Spiritually by Kenneth E. Hagin a few days before Precious Obasi chatted me up with an ARC of Church Girl for me to read and review.
He said and I quote, "Some of them told me, "God is doing a different thing nowadays." No. God's not doing a different thing nowadays. They're just off their rockers. He's still concerned about saving people."
Focus on the last sentence.
God's still concerned about saving people. Hold on 'cause I'm coming back to that.
Reviewing books is something I adore ever since I wrote my first review. It helps me condense my feelings about a book into words. Occasionally, I run into a book that fills me with so much that compressing my thoughts and emotions about it into words is almost impossible. Like Growing Up Spiritually. Like Church Girl.
So before you continue with this review, do note that my words cannot adequately describe the book.
Church Girl is... I don't have the adjective for it. I'd settle for extraordinary. Maybe the word I'm looking for is supernatural. You know the saying Na Pastor children dey bad pass, well, Precious Obasi tries to zoom in on that statement and unravels the lives of three Nigerian Christian young adults - Titi, Sarah and Declan.
I believe Church Girl is the story of teenagers and youth in the church, not just in Nigeria.
Church Girl shows how they struggle - the ones that plan to make the university their escape and Freetown where they can eat the lives of their heads; the ones who succumb to peer pressure; the ones who want to burn for the Lord but get sidetracked.
Church Girl shows the battles Christian young adults face, the secrets they keep and the lies they tell while trying to navigate life.
For a debut, this is amazing. Precious Obasi's work is on fire. Her writing is easy to read, the description is detailed but not superfluous, the characters are as real as you or me or the neighbors next door.
Church Girl is a must read for every Christian young adult, every Christian parent, even for the church at large because it handles the sins that beset Christian youth, the role of parents, and the, more often than not, wrong response of the Church.
God is still concerned about saving people o. That has to be the only logical explanation for this inspired work.
It was an honour to read and review this book. I can't wait to read the stories God inspires Precious to write.
Church girl is a must read, Precious tells the story the way it is so relatable. I just love how beautiful she paints the picture of intimacy with God in her book. It would leave you hungry for more.
An Excellent delivery of Good literature. For people of all classes especially the young. This book is nothing short of an Encounter for Any Christian, old and young alike
One of the best books I've read this year. And considering the year isn't even well-spent means a lot. This book would give you a 100% encounter with the Holy Spirit. I'll recommend it to everyone.
It was a good read, particularly because Sarah’s character was quite relatable. I absolutely hated how her parents and some of the church members “performed” Christianity, though. The hypocrisy was almost painful to watch.
The “mama” and “papa” dynamic that we often see in Christian communities on Nigerian campuses was one thing I didn’t particularly like. Not because it is unrealistic, but because I’ve always found the weight we place on these young people under those titles uncomfortable. They are still kids, yet they are sometimes placed on pedestals where everyone expects them to be almost infallible. And when that perception becomes important, it can become easier to excuse, minimise, or even cover up their wrongs rather than hold them accountable.
But overall, an impressive piece of Christian literature. Loved it.
I hope God reveals the truth of the Word to us as Christians and helps us to do Christianity right, instead of the legalism that a lot of people are currently practising.
Church Girl was a great read. Being someone that grew up in the church, I've always been faced with this belief that nothing could ever go wrong.
But then things went wrong in my own life and I didn't find any book, anywhere that the author could relate with my struggles. Church Girl is the first book of such a kind.
Highly recommend for both newbies and oldies in the faith.
This book is amazing in all sense. First the use of English words and how it made me refer to my dictionary every now and then is amazing. Next, how the characters shows reality, reading literally seems as though you're reading about yourself at some point. The message was passed. God bless you Precious for giving yourself to us in a book.
This was the first book I read in 2022 and it was one way to begin the new year. Church girl explores the habitual struggle of young adults in the church, owing to the contributions of our elders and parents that are meant to make worshipping a fulfilling lifestyle but instead a ritual we practice with skepticism. However, in all the love of God abounds ❤️
I could see my life play out in the major characters of the novel..I came to understand that our christian life shouldn't be directed by people around us and it helped me to understand that God still loves me at all times no matter what.
Want to know about being true to God and yourself?? .... Precious Obasi actually did a good job in talking about coming out of your old and dark past and embracing the Marvelous Light.
This could be liken to a contemporary bible that reveals the mind of God. Church girl is a spirit inspired book, the holy spirit is the one actually talking to the reader in reality.
Extra ordinary and inspirational. A masterpiece. I actually read it while watching the master piss. (Lol). But this is a must read for everyone, young and old.
