Mead's "Apollonius of Tyana" is a study in the entire history of this figure from birth through childhood, teaching, and eventual death. A de facto adviser to Vespasian, friend to Julia Domna, and persecuted by Nero, Apollonius wandered most of the known world in the first century and is sometimes considered the basic template upon which the story of Jesus Christ was formulated.
As with most works about Apollonius this work relies heavily on the writings of Philostratus, and contains a full bibliography of similar analytical and historical works.
