The Chase Family #1

Up In The Air

Rate this book
Hanging on by a thread, first-year resident Maggie Watson doesn’t need anything added to her plate. With a lead doctor always on her case, suffocating family expectations, and a schedule that leaves little time for sleep—the last thing she needs is a distraction. Especially in the striking form of Cam Chase, who stirs feelings in her she has no time for. He’s maddening and vain, but he’s also sweet and tender and despite her best efforts, she finds him taking the lead role in her fantasies. One kiss threatens to upend the delicate balance her life requires.

Cam Chase’s infamously charmed life has everything he could ever want on the surface. Handsome and likeable, he’s had all the money, women, and fame one could want. But when his father steps down from the charter jet company he built and leaves it in the hands of his brother Carter, Cam realizes he wants more. Lost and unsure where to look, he finds his purpose where he least expects it—reading to young patients under the watchful eye of Maggie Watson. She makes him want to be a better man and once he knows what he wants, he’ll do anything to prove to her and his family that he is worthy of their trust.

Me: I don’t love low angst.
Also me: BUT LOOK HOW SOFT THEY ARE

Maggie has zero time for romance between her residency and helping her mom out. The last thing she needs is a hotshot pilot with too much charm. And Cam Chase is all charm. The low angst of their enemies to lovers is balanced by the hero’s adorable insta crush. I loved watching Cam sort of redeem himself, and I loved watching Maggie learn to defend her own choices and needs to her mother. Something I feel deeply. I cannot wait for more of the Chase family dynamics too!

TL/DR Review
Stars: four and a half (I wanted more and third act break ups stress me out!)
Series: Chase Family - book one
POV: dual/ third person
Steam: multiple scenes, bit of slow burn, not kinky but not fade to black
Tropes: enemies to lovers, opposites attract, low to medium angst
For Fans Of: Sarina Bowen
Theme Song: Come Fly With Me by Frank Sinatra
Subgenre: contemporary romance
CW/ TW: medical conversations, Cystic Fibrosis of MC’s sibling, alcohol use

Up In The Air was my second Mindy McKinley romance read and left me wanting more! I’ve been reading more medical romances lately and after reading the blurb, I was all in.

Maggie is a dedicated doctor, sister and daughter. Cam is a sexy pilot and the biggest player around. The old adage, opposites attract could not be more true, than in this story. Maggie and Cam meet and there is a spark. Both take a step outside of their comfort zone and wow, it is on! I enjoyed watching them bring the best version of themselves forward. It was quick but not easy, but they get their very sweet and sexy happily ever after.

I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series and am giving Up In The Air the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

I think the first book in a series is always super fun!! You're getting introduced to new characters ( Although for this one, we've met Maggie before in the Baxter series!) and everything so so fresh and fun! The story in this book was great, the romance and tension was awesome. Followed a somewhat typical pattern of meet, fall in love, enjoy said love for a while, tragedy of some kind, split up, get back together. But I don't mind that type of story! Especially when what happens is believable to the characters. Sometimes the tragedy or mistake that breaks the MCs up just makes no sense, and that's when it's annoying. Glad to have a new series from Mindy to keep me occupied for a while as they come out!!

After an incident involving the mayor's son, charter jet pilot and infamous Chicago playboy Camden Chase is sentenced to serve community service in the pediatric ward of a local hospital. Cam's used to winning over women with his good looks and charm, so it comes as a surprise when Maggie Watson, the first-year resident assigned as his tour guide, is apparently immune to his flirting. Maggie's definitely not happy about being forced to show Cam around on his first day; she has enough to do without adding babysitting to the list, and it doesn't help that Cam comes across as arrogant and shallow at first. As she observes his interactions with their young patients, however, she begins to see a different side of him. Maggie decides to give Cam a chance, but can he prove that he's worthy of her trust?

I liked Maggie and Cam as a couple, but I was a bit disappointed by how fast their relationship progressed. Based on her initial feelings about him, I expected that he'd have to work harder to win her over, which would have created some fun banter and enemies-to-lovers vibes. At any rate, I liked how supportive they were of each other from the time they got together. Maggie had a tough family situation because of her younger sister's illness, and Cam didn't hesitate to jump in and help when an emergency arose during one of their dates. In return, Maggie encouraged Cam to pursue his dream of expanding his family's company into a new market, which was critical when so many others saw him as only a "good time guy."

Aside from the romance, my favorite part of the story was the subplot involving SkyChase, Cam's family charter jet business. After a recent health scare, Cam's father decided to retire and turn over management of the business to his three children. Carter, the oldest, became the CEO, and Cam had to choose between keeping his current job as a pilot or taking on greater responsibility within the company. Their younger sister Clara, a model and influencer, had to decide if she wanted an active role in the business at all. I was really intrigued by what we saw of Carter in this book. I can't wait for his story to find out why he's so uptight, and why he's so frequently dismissive of his younger siblings and their ideas. I'm even more excited for Clara's story to be told in the next book of the series. There was some definite tension between her and Cam's friend James that I can't wait to explore.

Overall, I enjoyed "Up in the Air" and would recommend it for all contemporary romance fans. I plan to continue with the series.

Emotionally Moving!!

Emotionally moving, brings on the tears...the smiles...and leaves you in a breathless state of wonder. I love reading a Mindy McKinley romance! She never fails to give you all the good feels of a HEA. Yes! My heart is still floating somewhere #UpInTheAir

This book centers around a hot Chicago pilot--playboy who has run into trouble and sent to community service in the pedaitrics ward where his heart is stolen by Dr. Maggie Watson. She's not impressed with Cam Chase. At all. But tell that to her heart and the fire that ignites between these two.
Can Cam prove this is love? Can a playboy be trusted?

The emotional landscape built takes you through every single emotion of the characters--joy--jealousy--heartbreak--sadness. Filled with raw emotion and vulnerability that will make you feel extremely invested and pull for that HEA.

Breathtaking? Yes. Awe-inspiring? Yes. Emotionally moving? You bet!
What a great take-off to the Chase Family series!!
P.S. loved the connection with Ms. McKinley's Baxter series!

Up In The Air can be read as a stand-alone romance...but why? I know I'm ready for the book 2!! If you haven't read the Baxter Brother Series by Ms. McKinely...I highly recommend!

I received an ARC copy of this book and loved it. Cam Chase is swoon worthy. First year, medical resident Maggie does not stand a chance against his charm. I love Mindy McKinley's writing style, it is effortless and takes the reader straight into the story from page 1. I was disappointed when it ended, I wasn't ready. I can not wait for book 2 and to continue on with the Chase family. In the meantime I plan to read the Baxter Boys series by the author.

Up In The Air is a sweet, slow burn romance from Mindy McKinley - with a bit of passion in all the right places! Enjoyed the insights into Dr Maggie and Pilot Cam as individuals, as well as their developing relationship. Right balance of drama and emotion.

Loved the intrigue that sparked between two secondary characters in the latter part of the book, leading towards their upcoming story.

Delightful read 4.5⭐️

This book was great! It’s light and fun with flirty banter and so much heart. Maggie and Cam have this addictive chemistry that’s as playful as it is steamy.

‘He grinned at her. It was sweet but dangerous, a mix that had heat pooling between her legs so fast her cheeks burned.’

There were so many interesting and unexpected pieces to this story. Maggie’s sister and Cam’s reading buddy each provide a unique depth that’s so special and endearing.

Mindy McKinley has created such a great balance in this story. It’s truly a wonderful reading experience filled with hilarious one-liners and heart filled moments. I can’t wait for the next one!
