Need something a little creepy, yet educational, for Halloween? Check out the Edge Books series on mummies. I’ll review just one, but note they all have a similar format.
Ever wonder about mummies today? This book covers a few of the “modern” mummies, explaining why some people have been mummified, whether on purpose or naturally. Each chapter opens with a “Learn About” box containing mini subject headings. There are pictures galore, with captions on each photo. There are also “Edge Facts” sprinkled throughout the book, giving us tidbits that don’t really fit in the main text, but are fun to know. There are also a couple of articles placed in separate boxes to emphasize certain facts that also do not fit in the flow of the regular text. There is a glossary, “read more”, websites list and an index in the back. Overall a well done book, and good for short reports or pleasure reading.

This only slightly creepy book flies off the shelves in my Elementary School Media Center. It contains photographs of... You guessed it.... Modern Day Mummies! Lenin, Mao, Eva Perron... Not to be used with students under 4th grade. Simply too shocking to see "real live" dead people! Great, quick read!
