The Kings of Rome is the first of three volumes of Roman history designed to be read aloud with even the littlest learners. The history of Rome provides the Foundations of Western civilization and will augment the study of Latin vocabulary.
We read this aloud (primarily to my 11 & 9 year olds but sometimes also to my 4 & 2 year olds) and I marveled at the connections I found. There is Latin and history, myth and legend, and interesting information about Ancient Rome that I hadn’t known before. It definitely is dry at times or a bit like reading King James (not entirely everyday speech) - although we weren’t always riveted, I enjoyed the stories and chance to read corresponding stories as we went through cycle one with Classical Conversations a second time.
This book did a phenomenal job covering the earliest years of Rome. Although it is intended for kids, I learned so much and it really whetted my appetite to know more about the history of Ancient Rome. I read this book with my youngest son on his last time through Classical Conversations Cycle one. I honestly wish it had been available years ago so I could have read it to all of my children.
I love History especially European history, and especially Roman history and while this was super informative and laid out well I found it rather hard to get through as an adult. My kids suffered through it and had a hard time making connections but for me asking them certain questions. We got through it but it took a lot out of us to do so.
