Genealogy is a fun hobby until the results of a consumer DNA test reveal a devastating secret. NPE* A STORY GUIDE FOR UNEXPECTED DNA DISCOVERIES is an authentic resource for people uncovering a new identity, their loved ones, and genealogists who encounter NPEs in a family tree.
There is no more fundamental human need than to belong – first to a family, and then to others. My story and research over three years provide information and support to guide readers. Relatable insights and true stories are presented that address the initial shock of discovery, suggestions about communications, new ethnicities, family recognitions and rejections, and the history of illegitimacy.
NPEs are found in all races, religions, and socio-economic groups in every country where consumer DNA tests are sold. By 2022, 142 million people worldwide will take DNA tests for genealogy and medical information. Ten to fifteen percent will discover they are NPE, like me.
(*Non-paternity event is a genetic genealogy term for a break in the family line/name, when your ‘Dad’ is not your biological father.)
For anyone who has a devastating DNA surprise, this book is very informative and full of wise counsel about how to approach others with your discovery.
Chances are you will one day know someone that is or has made a NPE discovery... OR you may even be one.... In most cases, it's a life altering, very traumatic event in their lives that could last years if not forever....It is a total loss of identity for them, they have lost half their lives as they knew it and many no longer know who they are....Yes, this happened to me, and thousands of other people..... Everyone needs to read this book so you know what the NPE has to go thru.. and so you know how you can possibly help them.....or yourself
I am not the intended audience for this book, and I knew that upfront. My husband found out a year ago that the man who raised him and loved him dearly was not his biological father. To say that the last few months have been a roller coaster ride would be a huge understatement. Our daughter gave this book to her dad to help him possibly get a better handle on the situation. He did find it helpful in a couple of areas. I decided to also read it to possibly help me, as we both navigate through this. I did not really find it helpful, and actually skipped a few chapters. The NPE experience truly affects the whole family. I am not sure if there are any books out there that are geared towards supporting the family through these very trying times but I do appreciate the author’s attempt to help those who are struggling through these life changing findings.
It's an easy read. It gave me new perspectives on what it's like to be an N.P.E. (non-paternal event/not parent expected), however, it took me quite a while to empathize with her situation. I thought perhaps it's because I'm not an N.P.E., but I've read other books by N.P.E.s, and they don't express the anger that she does. It's only until the end that I started to feel for her. There's much to unpack here, and I can't help but feel there's more to this story.
Everyone should read this! This is a very thought out, inciteful read to understanding the impact of taking a DNA test for fun, only to find out your birth certificate father is not your birth father. What to, and not to say to people.
