About the author

Darya Hodaei

11 books
Dr. Darya Hodaei, a pharmacy professional born in Tabriz, Iran, grew up as part of a marginalized ethnic group without access to formal education in her native language at schools. Later, when she realized how disconnected she was from her roots—and how vital it was to pass that heritage on to her children, she created EnglishAzerbaijani, a resource to help families preserve and celebrate their Azerbaijani Turkic identity.
Together with her husband, Dr. Hodaei is raising their children to be trilingual: speaking Azerbaijani-Turkic at home, Kurdish from their father, and English through school and society.
Dr. Hodaei believes that every child deserves to grow up proud of who they are and where they come from. Through her books, she hopes to spark curiosity, celebrate diversity, and help families stay connected to their cultural roots—one story at a time.

fun animal facts!

This is a great little book that simultaneously teaches about other languages and gives great fun facts about animals. I really appreciate that they subtly correct some misconceptions I’ve heard out there. Like cows have a 4 compartment stomach (not 4 stomachs) and horses sleep standing up and lying down (some people think horses only sleep standing up). It’s got cute, unique illustrations as well!

Roots are important!

This fantastically illustrated and beautifully executed children’s animal Pictionary is a joy to read through. Great for children interested in other cultures, but absolutely perfect for children with roots in the ancient Median empire. Giving kids a grounding in their own history and culture is something that should not be forgotten! Highly recommended!
