Mama, I Don't Want to Die is the candid and heart-rending story of Kelly Brown and her seven-year battle with drug addiction.
With a promising future as a special education teacher, Kelly's dreams came to a halt when drug addiction took control of her life. Starting with prescribed medication for chronic back pain, her addiction progressed to heroin usage. Through Kelly's personal journals, letters, notes, and conversations with her mother, Kelly described her spiraling, downward journey into the world of opiate addiction. Despite five stays at various drug rehabilitation facilities, and many months of being drug free, Kelly could not sustain her sobriety. On Friday night, November 6, 2015, Kelly died of an accidental heroin overdose, unknowingly mixed with fentanyl.
How does a family survive the unimaginable, devastating, and heartbreaking loss of a child? How can a mother comfort her other children? How can life ever be normal again?
While telling Kelly's story, Gina Brown describes the impact of Kelly's addiction on her immediate family, as well as the grief and sadness resulting from Kelly's death, and the eventual healing process needed to survive the loss of a child.
