Jay... Jay... *whispers* Jaaaay... JAAAAY!

The book boyfriend you've been waiting for.

I loved him in Cayman Island but I fell *in* love with Jay in this final climax to the Stillwaters series. He is the man Cayman deserved and Brasington-Crowley hasn't let me down when she served up another final book that would both devastate me and thrill me.

All I want to say is thank you to the author for writing such real, raw, strikingly vibrant characters that I think about long after I've read the book. They live inside me now. Cayman has always found this way to make me feel so utterly agonised but also so hopeful for her. She is the most lost of all of Brasington-Crowley's characters and written so incredibly well, the author deserves a standing ovation.

In this final installment, we're met with more trials and tribulations of real life, something Brasington-Crowley writes so impeccably, especially subjects that often so shrouded in emotion that some authors don't touch them - or worse, do a terrible job of them. Not this author and not these books. Brasington-Crowley captures the real mental state of someone lost, traumatised and in pain. She writes the truth. A skill not many possess and one I hope she continues to harness in later novels.

Nightingale is a merge of both Jay and Cayman's stories and the intermingling of two lost souls who eventually found each other. A love story that will haunt you and leave you smiling. Because everyone loves a happily ever after deep down...

A perfect ending!

Nightingale is about a loving couple trying to overcome painful, damaging times in their lives. At its heart is their process of healing and mending fences. Brasington-Crowley unflinchingly captures how the lingering effects of trauma can surface in even the most caring of relationships, and the importance of empathy and forgiveness (especially of oneself) while repairing others.
Nightingale is the third book of the Stillwaters series. While I agree with the author’s assertion that each book can be read as a stand alone, it’s my opinion you’d be missing out on some great story telling if you skipped the other two. Raven Song, the first book in Stillwaters’ companion series, is on my TBR!

Oh, my heart.

Cayman and Jay's story continues, and what a ride this is.
These two beautiful, broken, sweet souls that have suffered so much are finally together, trying to move forward in this awkward mess called life.

After seeing them falling in love in Cayman Island, in this book we see them face hardship in a way we haven't (and they haven't) seen before: together.

Cayman is a survivor of narcissistic abuse, and she faces her trauma every day, just like Jay has to live with his past addiction and mistakes. They support each other in such a tender way, my heart melts for them.

Nightingale dives into their past even further, and there's not a single plotline that's left untold. By the end of the story, we truly know everything about Cayman and Jay's (especially Jay's) past relationships, families, and friends, and we have a very clear image of where they are going, and what the rest of their lives will look like.

Just like the rest of the Stillwaters series, this is not "just" a romance. It's a journey through the lives of two wonderful people who have finally found peace in each other, and you will care deeply for these characters.

All the author's books can be read as standalones, but I strongly recommend reading this after book 1 and 2 to truly get all the details of the story but, most of all, of the characters' personalities.

The Last Installment in the Stillwaters Series Delivers a Wonderfully Satisfying Ending

The third book in the Stillwaters series, “Nightingale,” brings with it all the elements readers fell in love with in books one and two. It’s also the companion book to “Hell's Bells” – the capstone in the intertwined Raven Song series. In both, readers will discover characters moving seamlessly back and forth between the two final installments. This dual release was a brilliant initiative by author Jennifer Brasington-Crowley. I chose to read “Hell’s Bells” first, then “Nightingale.” The character-couple focus in “Nightingale” is husband and wife team, Jay Nightingale and Cayman Stillwater.

In the first installment of the Stillwaters series, the author introduces a light amount of paranormal influence into the storyline. Readers who shy away from such themes take heart: It’s a slender layer that pulls the story – and the series – together. Brasington-Crowley carried those same paranormal aspects forward in her second book, then brought it into “Nightingale” – although to a gentler degree. Still, I was thrilled to see this golden thread weaving some of the pages of “Nightingale” together. The author’s handling of this somewhat dreamy substory about Cayman’s previously doomed relationship (in book one) was delicate, respectful, and lovely.

A bit of the supernatural also comes in the form of Alistair Stillwater, Cayman’s outspoken and maybe-clairvoyant brother. The author excels in character development, and Alistair is one who, for me, shines. In fact, I want more Alistair. Whenever he appears on the page, I can’t get enough. Yet again, here Brasington-Crowley practices restraint – giving us just enough of Alistair’s snark and wit without turning him into a caricature of himself.

Additionally, the author uses Alistair magnificently as the court jester – he gets away with saying what needs to be said (often with shocking lines) to make things better for those around him. This writing device allows the author to spin a scene or a storyline toward the resolution she wants to give. And it works.

A challenge the author handled masterfully was moving forward along the timeline of Jay and Cayman’s life together. Readers don’t always easily follow along when years have suddenly gone by in a blink. It can be exceptionally difficult to jump ahead by weeks and months, but years? Brasington-Crowley pulled it off with ease by focusing on the milestones of childhood: Birth, language development, birthdays, etc. I daresay it’s one of the best examples of bringing the reader through the years – while still keeping them in the story – that I’ve ever seen.

As for relationships, the author moved the bond between Jay and Cayman forward as well. Both count significant exes in their history – both loving and not – and I was thrilled to see how the author handles the “nots.” She didn’t belabor the point with long, drawn-out scenes. As for the past loving relationships, Brasington-Crowley handled the reunion between Jay and a (sort of) lost love perfectly. Bittersweet at times, but the resolution was a good one – and believable, which made it even better.

Throughout this book, the author displays her prowess of taking a handful of words and arranging them in such a way that the impact is significant – or, cracks open the imagery she would like you to see in your head. Here is one of my favorites: “They call Las Vegas the city that doesn’t sleep, but Los Angeles was its kissing cousin, the city that’s always awake.” Perfect.

Another one of my favorites: “… he laughed a chittery laugh like his parents were crickets.” I loved that one.

I don’t include spoilers in my reviews, but be prepared to walk through some difficult times with Cayman and Jay as a couple as they face loss and fear together. It is heart-wrenching and at times painful to witness (as the reader), but Brasington-Crowley has never shied away from hard subjects. People don’t always get what they want, and the author allows that to happen in “Nightingale.”

The ending of this book was a lot of fun (for me) because Brasington-Crowley closely blended the final chapter of “Nightingale” with the end of “Hell’s Bells” – again, a fabulous move. Also, the last decision made by Jay and Cayman about their future together was immensely satisfying. The author had two choices – and both were valid – but I’m glad she wrote the story’s wrap-up in the way that she did.

Five stars to this capstone! If you haven’t yet picked up this series, check out “Stillwaters” and “Cayman Island” (one of my favorite books of all time – period). You won’t be able to stop yourself from becoming a fan of Jennifer Brasington-Crowley’s work!

Out of all the books in the series, this one stole the show. Even though I was expecting something TERRIBLE to happen the entire time, something so BAD that it would ruin everything Jay worked for, it didn't. And I couldn't be prouder of him! A great example of overcoming your past and facing your demons with strength, conviction and oodles of love. There were very little issues I had with this book and any that I did have didn't ruin the journey for me. Jay proved to have a backbone time and time again, even when he was on the edge of slipping up. If this is how it feels to watch your kids graduate high school or whatever sappy metaphor you can attach to this, then holy macaroons does it feel amazing. Now if only Jay was ACTUALLY real. I can dream, right?

Jay Nightingale just wants to live a quiet life with his family on his strawberry farm. But a request from a long-ago friend threatens to disrupt the life he’s spent years building.

NIGHTINGALE contains heaping servings of humor, sarcasm, romance, cursing, hope, and, of course, pie. Author Brasington-Crowley had me laughing, crying, gasping, and laughing once more as her characters grapple with issues surrounding abuse and mental health in a very real, compassionate way.

NIGHTINGALE can be read alone, or as the finale of the Stillwaters trilogy. I read it immediately after completing HELL’S BELLS, the companion novel and finale of the author’s Raven Song trilogy.

"Nightingale" continues to tragic stories of Jay and Cayman and their lives found together as discovered through the previous two books in this series. While Cayman was the centre of attention in the first two books, "Nighingale" takes the primary POV of Jay to carry their story forward.

So, why couldn't I give this story a stellar 5-star rating? A couple reasons, mostly related to my own preferences. The story felt rushed to get to the end, a series of snap shots in time like looking through a photo album. Which, when said like that, sounds kind of cool and a good narrative device to move the story through 10 years of marriage, miscarriage, birth, relationship healing, and so much more, but for me, it felt a bit disconnected. Secondly, the dependence these two characters have on each other was just too much for me sometimes. And this is a tricky one because this is a reflection of some people's very real co-dependence on each other after suffering deep tragedy in their past. Brasington-Crowley did have her characters call themselves on this level of dependency a couple times, and their ability to help each other worked for them allowing them to work through their past rather than lose themselves to it. So, it's not a flaw that the author wasn't aware of, but for me, I just couldn't get behind it.

That being said, what was great about this story? Like all of Brasington-Crowley's stories, it addressed a lot of real life realities. Life long consequences of bulling, the emotional fragility resulting from tragedy, anxiety, addiction, emotional abuse, miscarriages, and so much more, and that attitude of "keeping it real" is one of the reasons why I keep coming back to her stories. I really enjoyed being in Jay's head more in this story as he's a good guy, and being able to explore his previous life as a rockstar superstar taps into one of the author's strengths: writing about what it's like in the music industry once the stage lights are off. The cross-over between Jake Nightmare and Raven Xerces will be what fans have come to this book for, and the hopeful sun-on-the-horizon ending will make everything feel worth it.

This book was a great continuation of Cayman and Jay’s story. From two broken people that found love and realized it was the real thing. Watching them start a family and grow together as people and parents was everything I wanted for them.

The addition of living out my rockstar dreams by watching a fictional band get together and bring backstage with them was the best perk.

If you’ve followed these characters through the authors previous books, you will be satisfied with this. It closes the loop on a few storylines and gives everyone a happy ending.

Nightingale is book 3 in the series and is a glorious read, heart warning, life affirming and yet still rock and roll.
The author is not afraid to tackle trauma, mental health and relationships and we cover all of this with Jay and Cayman, two characters who have a special place in my heart (alongside Raven Xerces, of course) (also, the dugongs)

🚨Spoilers🚨

This book is about Jay nightingale (or his alter ego Jake Nightmare) and Cayman.

The book starts with Jay and Cayman in a airport to go to her brother’s wedding. They run into none other than Raven ( this is still the messed up Raven and he is trying to score drugs from them, neither one of them do any of that anymore). Raven is also saying how the music scene really needs Jack Nightmare back but neither one of them are for it but wish him good luck.

Next up her brother who is psychic asks her when she was going to tell him she was having a baby. She is annoyed at his boldness but said she didn’t want to up stage his big day( he is marrying the love of his life and his daughter’s mom). Cayman has a really bad run in with her mom and her mom basically tells her now your knocked up and this man is no good and basically implying she will be there once again and be forced to pick up the piece of her daughter poor choice. Jay comes to her rescue and they decide its been long enough with these people and they are dipping out, but to make things worse her X husband Max is out there for the next wedding coming up and when he sees Cayman he is really awful to her, telling her her mom already told him about the baby and her warns Jay to basically be careful with this one she couldn’t even stop drinking for “their” baby and killed it (which isn’t even close to what happened). Jay has enough and threatened the guy with in an inch of his life and Max is raddled as he should be. Jay tells her how brave she was to make it 5 yrs with that ass because he couldn’t even make it 5 mins. Then she tells him it just you and me against the world which will become the thing they say to each other often. They decide somewhere in there to get married and they do and head off to where ever the dugongs are oh yeah it’s in Vanuatu. ( i just stopped to google, dugongs and called sea cows and are sea mammals and Vanuatu is an island in the South Pacific Ocean 🤔 interesting. Never heard of either but i appreciate the lesson).

While they are on vacation/honeymoon she talks him into going kite sailing and he is not excited because he is just not into those kinda things but her joy has everything to do with the ocean and originally want to be a marine biologist so this is completely her thing so to make her happy he goes. Some how or another he ends up falling off the board and his ankle strap come undone and Cayman spends several frantic moments screaming for him, diving to look for him, screaming for help and all the sudden Jonathan appears and tells her where to find Jay. As she is struggling to get him to shore with a concussion ( he hit his head on volcanic rocks coming out of the water and is bleeding and was unconscious when she first got to him) a fish boat comes up to help and said a man name Jonathan said a couple needed help. ( we find that out later).

They return home and Cayman is more clingy then ever because she just cannot go through that all again and he knows it’s unhealthy but he just lets it good and does what ever will sooth her.

Their next trial is Cayman accidentally finds a picture of Jay kissing another man in a very intimate way, and even though she knows its an old photo she still freaks out and calls her brother who basically said i saw what i saw and this man is your true soul man and maybe you should just ask him about it. That exact what she does and even though she is a nervous wreck because she see this as someone that could take him away from her, he is perfectly calm like yeah?? She is like ummm it another man and i am not homophobia but i think i need an explanation. So he tells her sorry i thought i made it clear from the beginning, I am bi-sexual (just no big thing). Well she needs to know more so they talk about it and at first its feel off to her but then she realizes its silly and its in the past.

Next thing I hate happens to them is so horrible and i feel so bad for both of them but especially Cayman, she has just been through SOOO much loss and she is already so fragile. But while she is out running like she does normally she starts cramping really bad and starts to feel a wetness and she realizes she is losing their baby. ( as we know she has been through this once before with Max) well she makes it back home under extreme circumstances and doesn’t want to tell Jay because he wants a baby just as bad as her and they were both so excited for this next step. He comes looking for her fresh out of the shower a bit worried because her brother has been calling nonstop and he won’t do that unless he knew something was wrong. While she is in the other bathroom she knows Jay is in the shower and she is just so beside herself she thinks she should just kill herself instead of going through this pain once again but it worse because this baby was made from love of two loving people and was so very wanted by both of them. So she try’s to drown herself in the sink which doesn’t work of course and Jay is there trying to find out whats wrong and when he puts it all together the both sink to the floor and he noticed that she is bleeding all over his towel he is still in and the both cry very hard together. Cayman is still a nervous wreck and Jay assures her they will be fine and they will do this together and encourages her to have some positive thoughts but she cant calm about it till she talk to her brother and has a dream about Jonathan. Where he tells her baby will be perfectly fine and that he will see her in his dreams. Jay is mad because he doesn’t feel she believes in him and after talking they both have a better attitude.

Fast forward 3 yrs and she is once again faced it a positive pregnancy test and she is so terrified for doing this all again she is thinking of getting a secret abortion just to save them all the heart ache again, she just doesn’t think she can do this again. Her brother calls and basically says don’t even think about this because you will lose Jay forever when he finds out and you would deserve it. She takes a walk on the beach just to think and when she is gone too long Jay comes to find her and hands her the pregnancy test and says the dog got in the trash and he found it. He asked her if she was going to tell him but i think he suspects something but gives her an out by asking if she just needed to think and she takes the out and says yes she just needed to think( or it’s some very close to that i may not remember my details exactly right).

As soon as both families find out they decide they are going to do a group baby shower for them and some very long overdue conversation take place between both Jay and Cayman with each of their moms and at last some so very needed healing starts and when baby Juliet arrives they are over run with grandparents and uncles and cousins. Some more healing takes place and these two finally have some good family support at last! So long overdue i wanted to punch there mom’s and Jays dad many times in the series.

Fast forward again I think 6-7yrs, they are really living the perfect life and then Jay get the call from Pretzel and she talks him into doing the same show she talked Raven into doing and he is not excited to tell his wife. The calls are made and the show will go on. Jay really goes through a lot with this. He cannot forget what happened he has so much anxiety but he want to do it at the same time. He has to deal with his past feeling with Jordan (the man from the picture) Jordan ( i am glossing over Jordan but there is a lot to sort through emotionally for both of them) was his first everything and he thought they all just left him after the accident, but he finds out that none of his band left except his brother Tim and his X wife Kate abandoned him when he needed them he just was in a coma so he didn’t know and then he overdosed on purpose because he couldn’t take the survival guilt and really just the person he turned into after the accident, his other brother Cody told everyone to go away and took him away to help him get clean and to save his life. Then he runs into his X Kate and it throws his already high anxiety into hyperdrive and begs Cayman to come early because he just needs her as much as she needs him. When Cayman gets there he is on edge and she talks to him and he finally tells her that the run in with Kate has just really messed him up.

It finally time for the show and Jay is an absolute mess clear up to the second he belts out the first notes of the first song and Cayman can literally see him changing from Jay nightingale into Jack Nightmare right before her eyes and even though she is terrified she know in her heart this is what he was meant to do. For Jay once he gets up there and lets go at last none of the things he was ever worried about happened, in fact the opposite happens and he realizes that that is the best show he ever played because he was sober and its the best high ever and how could he ever leave this again and after some Raven drama( see that book to hear the drama) that Cayman comes to the rescue for and forces Indy to own up for her actions for once. Conversation are had and it sounds like Jake Nightmare is going back on the stage with his wife right by his side. And I can’t wait to see what happens next in the last book!! The End.

This was soooo good !! I have love all these books so much so far. I will be sad when i read them all but then i guess it will give me time to read them again and find little things i missed the first time rushing to see what was next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️= loved every bit of the ride.
🌶️= i will give this half a pepper.
🤯= there were a few spots that definitely blew my mind.
⚠️= suicidal ideation, loss of baby, mental abuse, PTSD.
