Rules can be overwhelming to young children. Exploring is one way for children to see how different and vast the world really is. Climb a Giraffe explores the possibilities while understanding why rules keep us safe. Exploring helps your kids with their imagination while climbing a Giraffe.
A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This was a fun and lovely rhyming story with excellent heart. It’s about a kid who doesn’t want to sit still and be patient, he wants to explore, finding things play with, animals etc. And the world wants that for him as well. The rhymes and the cadence a spot on, the book flows nicely, and will be a great addition to any storytime collection.
While the style of the book is bright and fun, the overall message, in my opinion, conveys that children are typically only happy when they get to do what they want (explore, dig, have adventures), instead of listening when a parent asks. It seems to make allowances for disobeying.
On the flip side of the coin, it may help a parent see things from a child’s perspective, but because this is aimed at children, not parents, I would not recommend this to a classroom.
There also is a lock of connection between the reader and child in the book- we don’t even know his name. I wish there were a few changes that could be made to include a better connection and perspective, as the illustrations are fabulous.
To dream the impossible dream...is it really possible to achieve with your imagination ignited and the sky ( not ) being the limit? An adorable little boy wants to climb up on a giraffe so he can see the world from up high leaving all the do and don't rules set before him behind.
This adventure story propels readers into scenarios that break the rules that adults set. Kids are invited to join a creative little boy who wants to: dance with a peacock who can teach him how to fly, eat all his vegetables for his long journey of adventure ahead of him, and dig for lost treasure only to find a slimy slug he'll name Geronimo, just to name a few.
He concludes that rules are good ... but adventure is too! Kids will relate to those feelings of wanting to grow up, spread their wings and explore the world around them. Freedom builds courage, problem solving skills, and a pathway to follow your heart's desires.
The bright colourful illustrations bring the text alive and are kid-friendly and delightful. The book encourages kids to follow their dreams no matter where they may lead. The simple language is a wonderful starter book for beginning readers to read solo. This is a wonderful life lesson to learn for both the young and the old. I recommend this book.
So many rules. Rules for inside. Rules for outside. No to this and no to that. When can a kid just do whatever they want without an adult telling them they can't?
In this delightfully ridiculous tale, our little main character is sick and tired of hearing about all the things he isn't allowed to do. So with his wild imagination he comes up with a list of things he is allowed to do because there aren't any rules for that. Climb on a giraffe so he can look down on the world? Why not!
Great illustrations bring the book alive and are so vivid and captivating. The prose is simple for young readers to tackle independently.
Rules are good, but so are adventures! Young readers will connect to the feeling of wanting to break free from the confines of rules, wanting to grow up so they can make their own choices, and the desire to explore the world around them. A delightful and dynamic tale about embracing curiosity and thinking outside the box to get what you want, this is a great story for families.
It's hard to follow all of the rules everyone seems to want us to follow, even if it won't hurt anyone, and we are very curious. So, we are encouraged to take that curiosity, add in a large part of imagination, and daydream away! The ideas are wonderful, and the illustrations by Yuke Li are colorful, fun, and delightful! This is a life lesson that is well written for everyone-including ESL! Love it! I requested and received a free temporary e-book copy from Clavis Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
Kids have lots of rules to follow, but what about those adventurous kids who would rather dig and explore than sit still?
Climb a Giraffe is a cute little book from the kids' perspective all about the wild and wonderful things kids want to do - like climbing giraffes or going to Mars with a pet slug.
Its a sweet reminder for the adults in the kids' lives to explore and find wonder in the world again, and to balance that with the rules we need to follow.
~Many thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
The hero here is mindful of all the advice and rules he has to live by – do this, tidy that, eat your greens etc – but also of how important wishing your world away to one of climbing giraffe necks, flying with peacocks and space exploration can be. In showing the ideal world as being one of carefree adventure but with careful following of the rules, it's a nicely balanced message, hopefully to make a nicely balanced young person of the reader.
I know this is a proof, but there was too much wrong with it for me to enjoy. The story was just okay. The drawing style as well. Not the best of this author.
“I want to dance with a peacock. She can teach me to fly!” A fun imaginative read!
I spotted this one at one of my libraries and was interested in the title and the cover, I just had to bring this one home to read. And I am glad I did because this was tons of fun.
In this one we meet a little boy who is done with the rules, and I understood that very well. I am not a child anymore, but I still remember those days. Remember all the rules and things you should and shouldn’t do and how boring that was. Because you just want to do something fun! Without constantly hearing that you cannot do x or y. The kid decides to have a big old imagination festival and dreams about climbing a giraffe, dancing with peacocks, going to Mars. I loved how the book at first goes for bleh rules and let me have my adventures, but then the little boy also realises that rules are at times handy. I mean, you do get tired, so going to bed? No problem. Though first he got to build that house on Mars, haha.
I loved the ending and especially what the little boy is carrying, that was such a nice extra.
The art by Yuke Li is just so fantastic! I really love the style and love how they drew characters and animals. They made the imagination of the kid come to life.
All in all, a very lovely imaginative book about rules, fantasizing about fun things, and more!
Climb a Giraffe is a fantastic book for children and adults. It serves as a great reminder that while following rules is always important, our kiddos learn and grow while exploring, imagining and playing. Just because we don't understand what they are doing or what they are playing, does not mean that they do not like or want our rules, but they are simply trying to grown and find themselves. I love the message in this book along with the bright and colorful illustrations. This is a must have book for every home and classroom!
