Thoughts: This is an easy-to-read and understand book about the basics of Tarot. There is a lot of information here about not just the cards but how to use them and how they relate to other traditions like Kabbalah, astrology, crystals, meditation, and more. The author notes that this book is based on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck specifically but the information applies to any deck. She explains the major and minor arcanas, what each suit is, and the meanings behind the cards. She also gives examples of several spreads and how to read them. At the back of the book are lists of common symbols found in most decks and their meanings, a glossary, resources, and websites for further study. She notes that this is a beginner’s book but at the same time, I believe it is a valuable resource for anyone using the Tarot.
Recommendations: Definitely recommended for the beginner and as a good resource for the experienced. Excellent book to start with.

I first became interested in the Tarot 30 years ago and duly bought a book and the Rider-Waite pack and started doing readings for myself and others. Since then, I’ve collected many other Tarot packs and bought a number of other books on Tarot.
My dearest wish now is that Dawn had written her book 30 years ago and that hers had been that first book I had bought. It would have made my journey with Tarot that much more interesting and my learning that much faster. Dawn’s book is like a guidebook that’s been written by a local from the place it’s about, a real insider view, with many insights that other guidebooks have missed.
She has also met the difficult challenge of writing an accessible book that can be used easily by new beginners and equally, with the depth of detail in her treatment of the subject, one capable of teaching us older, more experienced dogs new tricks. In doing so she has created a book that can justifiably be called The Complete Guide to Tarot.
I particularly love her approach of designing your own spreads rather than just trotting out the usual historic ones that most other books contain. In doing so she has made the Tarot a living flexible tool for the future rather than limiting it to the past.
With her book she has reignited my passion for Tarot and taken my interest to a new level. Thank you, Dawn!

Comprehensive for beginners without being overwhelming, this book provides good information on all aspects of Tarot - not just the card meanings and spreads, but also how to choose and handle a deck, what it can be used for, how to incorporate other forms of spirituality or divination into your readings, and even how to talk about Tarot with those who may be nervous or skeptical about it. Very useful!
