Rumi — Captives of the Light

Rate this book
'Rumi — Captives of the Light' is a novel of love, philosophy, and poetry, about the sun and the moon, about mirrors and reflections and women as wives, mothers, and daughters in a society based on duty and sacrifice.

Through longing, betrayal, and despair, it tells the 13th-century story of the epic love affair between philosopher-poets Mavlana Rumi and Shams-I Tabrizi. But it also tells the unchanging story over the centuries of women’s suffering in a men’s world and the sacrifices they have to make in order to survive, with the women in Rumi’s life for once taking centre stage. Like Rumi and Shams, these women are drawn to the light of love but ultimately, they are scorched by the passion between these two men as it engulfs everything and everyone.

Shams, a mystic, searches and even offers his head in return for finding the man who will light his path to his enlightenment through love. When he finds Rumi, they fall in love instantly. But the light of their love casts a dark shadow on those around Rumi. While the two men search for perfection through love, Rumi’s wife, Kerra, suffers deeply and desperately waits for her husband to return to her. But when Shams leaves Rumi, to the despair of his wife, Rumi becomes a shell of a man. With Shams’ return, Kerra realises that she has to find a way to keep her family from breaking up. It is time for her to take a decision. In order not to lose her husband, she has to give something in return. Her choice burns everyone.

Fantastic story made with beautiful poetry...

Having heard briefly of Rumi I decided to try this book, in the hope to learn more and also to gain a better understanding of his work. I have no idea how much is fact or fiction but either way I relished in this tragic love story. Once started was very difficult to put down!
