Blue Death: The Awakening

Rate this book
People all over New York are being struck down by a stalking killer. And it appears a lot like your family and friends... As the world’s leading virologist, Jack Middleton is obsessed with viruses — the deadlier the better. He has long been predicting an outbreak of bird flu, but nothing can prepare him for the horror that is about to unfold. When people start being admitted to hospitals with a deadly new virus, Jack’s life is turned upside down. Together with esteemed epidemiologist Kate Sharpe, he must use all his skills to track down the source of the worldwide outbreak and crack the genetic code of the virus before it's too late. It’s a terrifying account of what will happen if bird flu mutates to humans. The UK’s most renowned flu expert, virologist Professor John Oxford, describes Blue Death as “scientifically realistic’ with great “pace and dynamics.”

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It tells the story of a new pandemic mutated bird flu. The main character is an American epidemiologist Jack Middleton, working from London. And through the use of flashbacks we are shown how the virus spreads and mutates.

Because of the reliance on people drinking, going to bars etc. I started feeling like this was a warning to stay sober. It is very odd.

There are also a lot of awkward time jumps.

It is a scary book and the symptoms are truly horrific. and I will probably read the sequel. but it is an inconsistent book.

I thought the premise of the story was realistic and believable and it is certainly possible. The very graphic and realistic details reflected a great deal of research on the part of the author. However the book had very limited character development such that the more principal characters were at best two dimensional and as a result, the story lacked depth. Since the premise is so real, I rated the story a 3. I will be reading the second book since I am hooked, but hope that the story will be tighter and the characters will be better developed and three dimensional.

This has to be one of the most thought provoking books I have read in a long time. The virus that is unleashed in this book is so possible that it makes you think what if throughout the whole book. As you navigate the pages you will have a hard time putting this book down. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
