Quiet Success. Dense book.

As an introvert I was interested to discover new insights and strategies for success that are specifically designed for people of my mindset. I don’t enjoy having to perform or speak up in front of others, and find presentations especially daunting, but of course over the course of a professional career one learns to adapt and perform under pressure. I thought this book might have suggestions on how to better deal with this.
However, although the book is quite long and dense, I found myself often feeling that much of the content is vague and could be applied to anyone, not just the introvert. I appreciate that the author has sought to provide support to introverts in the workplace, but I did feel that there was so much generalisation and were so many sweeping statements and catch-all approaches that I’m not sure how helpful this book would be to individuals. I’ve read many business text books over a professional and academic career, and I didn’t feel that this book particularly brought anything new to the table, which is a shame.
The author attempts to propose a Quiet Success approach and describes how we can find our Quiet Success Sweet Spot, and it’s this that he appears to propose is the USP of this book. However, I personally didn’t feel that this was a unique contribution, as the advice and strategies are quite generic.
The book could have been thinned out and made less intense, focusing on specifics and dropping a lot of the content relating to anecdotes. A cleaner, more concise text with more specific pointers would have worked better for me.
That said, there is a lot of information in this book, and if you are prepared to sift through it, you may find something of value.

Quiet Success is the book I've been waiting for. It helped me find myself. The concepts presented showed me how to look at my career more holistically. I also realized that with some small changes in my job, I could make it much more interesting and fulfilling. I haven't started on the ten principles yet, but I definitely plan to give it a try. This is a good book for introverts who are trying to find themselves.

A Review of Quiet Success: The Introverts Guide to a Successful Career by Tomas Kucera
Headline: How to live a fulfilling life

In many ways, Tomas Kucera sells his book, “Quiet Success: An Introverts Guide to a Successful Career” far short. Although Mr. Kucera does an in-depth study and explanation of the traits, strengths, and weaknesses of introverts in both business and in life, he also casts many wisdoms concerning the same categories vis a vis extroverts, and thus provides a manual for everyone in how to better succeed in work and in life.
This is not your typical book; it is a workbook that unabashedly challenges the reader to do the many and fruitful exercises contained within to improve their understanding of their core values, what makes them happy, what success means to them, and ways of overcoming their weaknesses so that they live not only a more fulfilling work life, but also a personal one. This is a book of learning and self-discovery.
Not only does Mr. Kucera talk the talk, but he also walks the walk, plainly displaying the depth of the research and effort he has put into this marvelous coaching manual. As a life-long psychotherapist, I must confess to having a jaundice view of life coaching. Quiet Success has put that view firmly to bed, indeed it is interred while being replaced with a healthy respect for informed and skilled coaching of any kind.
Also, an introvert, I found this book informative and reading and partaking in some of the exercises resulted in changes in my own thinking and has allowed me to weather some of my anxieties in more productive and pro-active ways. I benefited even though I’m near the end of my career. I think people in the beginning or early middle of their careers would gain even more and find “Quiet Success: An Introverts Guide to a Successful Career” potentially life altering.
I highly recommend this book to anyone (extroverts, and introverts alike) who accepts personal responsibility for the living of their lives and is interested in developing a more positive attitude toward work and life.

‘Quiet Success: The Introvert’s Guide to a Successful Career’ by Tomas Kucera is loaded with information about introverts, professional and personal development, acquiring all possible skills to build the right approach toward your career. This exhaustive guide could be more exhausting than an ultra marathon. It can help you understand what kind of an introvert you are, how to use your strengths to succeed, what are your passions, how to take a holistic view of your life and choose a career that suits your personality. It encourages you to choose your own definition of success but burdens you with all possible strategies that every other person would employ to be successful.

While Tomas emphasizes on choosing the type of career that resonates with you, he agrees that “ the quest to find a dream job that would make you happy is the biggest lie of modern society.” Therefore he suggests that you have to work hard to make your job “a sweet spot.” Anything new? We have been hearing this forever! He expects you to have every possible virtue and positive trait that can be imagined to be successful – be committed, be respectful, be flexible, be reliable, be open minded, be humble, be likable, be assertive… not even once does he say be yourself. You have to trust others, build self-awareness, be disciplined, avoid gossip… the list is endless!

There is a lot of repetition in this book, lengthy chapters with unnecessary details. What could be conveyed in a single sentence takes a paragraph, as the style of writing is informal. It needs an incisive editor to make it more effective and readable.

There are not many books about career development that target specifically introverts, so I was eager to pick up this one. It is a solid guide that doesn't immediately tell you to change your job or who you are. It tells you to look at your career as a whole. The book is well structured, and the individual chapters sort of build upon each other. If you want to have it more than just a light reading and make some change in your life, there are useful summaries and a list of questions to answer for yourself at the end of each chapter. These can be eye opening. I would highly recommend this book to all introverts.

It was really refreshing to see something written specifically to target the professional development of introverts. I feel they are a tribe of people who are sometimes weighted by a natural and default tendency to stand outside the crowd, rather than stand within it. Being an introvert myself, I know that this is sometimes regarded as a negative trait, especially to those who are extroverted. In which case, it doesn’t surprise me that the writing also acknowledges this as a shortcoming.

But, if you are an introvert and have difficulty finding ways to step outside of yourself, then you’ll be happy to know this book works extremely hard at teaching you how to rewire your belief system. In fact, this is pretty much the overall tone and argument until the very end of the book.

The one “huge” drawback is that by the mid-point of the book, you’ll notice the writing fails to offer viable examples of real-life, career-oriented introverts. In that way, I’m not sure how much you’ll be pumped about practicing the book’s exercises without knowing of others who have successfully beat their personalities to make undeniable career feats. But they are good exercises, nonetheless.

Overall, I do recommend this book. It is one to be kept in your home library.
