Each time I visit Paris, I sit with him in his shop and watch the world pass by, amidst a symphony of languages. I love feeling a part of the community and often bargain with shoppers while Erol is in the back making tea. I've made some excellent sales (without undervaluing any family heirlooms... I hope).
Even though Erol is a merchant, he doesn't really seem to care if he sells things or not. "La vie continue," he says. Life goes on. He is really more about meeting people and sharing.
He is also a serious thinker and likes to talk about the state of the planet. He is worried, as we all should be. But he has an innocence, an optimism, that gives me hope. He simply wants everyone to be happy. He says, "Smiling is not expensive." He believes we need to "join to each other," hold each other. Connect.
It should, indeed, be that simple.
