This book stunningly confirmed all that intuitively and from decades of teaching maths I knew: the inappropriateness of how we teach, of early formalising, and of the importance of manipulatives. What Dienes has done is to identify precisely why we have problems and what to do about them. It is beyond me why so little notice seems to have been taken of this brilliant man and his expose. Here is a text that I shall return to again and again, and which has prompted me to further explore his own work and also that of some of his colleagues.
