Not fact-checked. Some vague questions. Some duplicates. Some poor answers.

I like quizzes and puzzles, so when this book appeared on a promotion I grabbed it so I could keep it to hand if I needed to amuse anyone during a long journey or while waiting for something. Before I took it out, though, I dipped in to see what the questions were like. Sadly, I was disappointed.

Despite the title, this book does not really contain questions that I would count as “trivia”. Instead it starts with a selection of questions about the natural world, including the somewhat open-ended “What is the role of a flower?” There are several possible answers to this, but the book only accepts one “produce seeds”. Sure, this is one function of a flower, but so is giving off scent and looking attractive to insects so they will pollinate it. This kind of question would just provoke arguments in my family, rather than helping peacefully while away the hours.

I was also disappointed by the lack of information in some of the answers. For example, the following answer seems like a child’s guess:

35. Spiders are highly diverse, true or false?
Answer: True. The spiders are diverse because some are harmless, while some can be fatal.

Spiders are diverse for many other reasons than that. They have different habits, live in different environments, are different sizes, colours, and shapes. The list goes on.

While we are on spiders, consider this question:

36. How many legs spiders have? a. Six b. Four c. Eight d. Nine
Answer: C – Eight. Spiders belong to the arachnid family. One of the characteristics of the arachnids is having eight legs.

That seems almost reasonable, if you skip the strange grammar of the question, until you realise that just a few pages earlier, there was this question:

27. How many legs do spiders have? a. Six b. Four c. Eight d. Two
Answer: C – Eight. Spiders belong to class Arachnida. Creatures under this class have two body segments, no wings, and eight legs. They are incapable of chewing. Ticks, mites, and scorpions are arachnids.

I think question 27 is better in every way. It is grammatically correct and the answer is informative, so why is question 36 even in the book?

The book seems rushed, unedited, and not even fact-checked. There are some good questions and answers in there, but the potential for argument and misinformation means that I won’t be taking this one with me after all.

Needs to fact check some reasons for answers

You need to be careful with this book… either the author purposefully put false information in the book to catch people who might copy from it… or he didn’t do a good job on research and fact checking.

There are also many duplicate questions throughout the book.

A great variety of facts

I loved the variety of facts. I knee a lot of the answers but it was still a fun light read.

Enjoyed the book and it made the trip seem shorter but we finished two books before we got to our destination. The books need to be longer!
