Val is an accidental author! She started writing in 2010 when she realised the family history research she was working on would make a great story.
That story ultimately turned into The Ambition & Destiny Series, a five part series with a short story prequel.
By the time that was complete, Val had developed a taste for writing and began a series of historical cozy mysteries - Eliza Thomson Investigates.
Prior to writing, Val trained as a scientist and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. In 2012, she set up her own consultancy business, and currently splits her time between business and writing.
Born and raised in Liverpool (UK), Val now lives in Cheshire with her husband, two daughters and a cat. In addition to family history, her interests include rock music and Liverpool Football Club.
Everyone of the books in this series deserves to be read and 5 stars! VL McBeath is a fantastic story writer and she writes about her family's history. In this series, she writes about her great grandmother 's life and adventure in the high seas as one of the very first women to work on a ship going from England to America..Working in first class she mets many challenges not only from the high class passengers but from the male crew who some have a very hard time excepting women working a man's job...Not only enjoying her job and facing the troubles there, she has two children at home watched by her older sister who resents her being gone but also the loss of her husband that was loss at sea.. Fourth book in this series,it is a excellent, well written story and looking forward to find out what happens when she decides this is her last trip but will there be another love in her life!!
Another really interesting story in the series. It really emphasises the role of a woman in the Victorian age. A woman should know her place and woe betide those that didn’t! Scary times for Nell as she takes another return voyage across to New York. A trip full of the usual hard work, awkward passengers, a pregnant Captain’s wife who knows nothing about child birth, frustration and tough decisions. Well written, easy to read and full of emotional highs and lows. Looking forward to the next chapter in Nell’s life.
I love reading about Nell and her family. As always the story was well researched and well written. Nell goes back to the ship for another trip and gets into trouble right away. I enjoyed learning about what went on during the historical time and the way women were treated. I liked Nell as a strong female lead. She defied the traditional role of women and took a job aboard a ship which was brave at that time. The story held my interest from the first page. I would highly recommend it. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
The Captain’s Order continues the tale about Nell and the friends she has made while being a stewardess on a ship that transports passengers from Liverpool to NYC. The last trip of the season is full of twists and turns as illness sweeps the ship and Nell begins to appreciate Mr. Marsh. If you enjoy historical fiction I believe you would enjoy this series.
This book was, yet again, fabulous to read. I had so much trouble putting it down
each night, it caused me many a late night. I really hope there is a follow on book so we can see how Nell and Mr Marsh get along,, I am hoping for a very happy conclusion. Thank you for another good read.☺☺.
It is very interesting when you can compare customs from the past with those that we have nowadays. Nell, a very attractive widow, can't avoid the rivalry that arises among her suitors. I liked the book very much.
I've really enjoyed this book. Nell was a very amazing lady. She made sure No One took her over and she stood up to her sister. If you want a great read them start at the beginning and read them all. Great author and story teller. ❤❤
I have throughly enjoyed this series and the characters. And the guest on the liner is so interesting. I highly recommend this series. The author is suberb.
Although Nell's previous journeys have been eventful, this one really stretches her, with difficult passengers, the pregnant Captain's wife who could not understand why she would be better off staying behind and preparing for the baby rather than risking giving birth at sea and the stewards, eyeing for her attention and convinced that they each stood a chance of being her beau.
I have always enjoyed McBeath's historical sagas - well researched, documented and very well written, drawing the reader into the situation and making the books very difficult to put down. This is another winner for sure. Much enjoyed, thank you Val for the ARC!
