I was raised in Grantham, Lincolnshire and attended the King's Grammar School after passing the Eleven Plus exam. In the latter I clearly remember writing an essay on Oliver Cromwell – my first piece of military writing.

Then came a BA in history and international relations at Nottingham followed by a Master of Philosophy course at the University of York. The subject was the generalship and cavalry of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, my boyhood hero, during the English Civil War. The year I spent researching and writing at York, Oxford and at the British Library in London was a truly wonderful time.
I moved to London and eventually joined a small publishing company as an editor. Thus began my writing career.

Pleasant, easy-to-read coffee table book history, with a nice bright design reminiscent of a game board. I will admit to some irritation that the titles don't necessary use the famous names of these battles, and that one has to dig through the entries to find them...but for the most part, this is mostly harmless.

I had a hard time keeping up with the dates in this book throughout the year. It was always in the place where I kept my “currently reading” books, but I just rarely felt the need to pick it up and read the day’s battle. They’re too short perhaps, many of them being kept to a small paragraph on as little as 1/5 of the page on some days. I guess I wouldn’t really recommend it to anyone trying to read one battle for each day of the year.
