Faelyri, princess of the twilight elves, lives an uneventful, unambitious life in her castle under the stars (while also idolizing the biggest traitor her country has ever had). In a sick twist of fate, she gets chosen by a magical weapon to rule, placing her in the center of a power struggle for her kingdom.
As if it couldn't get worse: the weapon itself is dying, which will cause the protective magic around her castle to also fall, opening her home up to old threats.
Lyri now needs to restore the life in her dying weapon by following the trail of her childhood hero (the long-lost traitor-Queen) across the land of Farfell. Along the way, she meets a morally-ambiguous human who wants to cash in the bounty on her head, a genius orc wizard, and a dwarven miner with the power to heal.
Incredibly short on time, in this LGBTQ+ romantic fantasy, Lyri needs to make sure she finds her hero before her enemies do, so she can save her crumbling country.

Wow!! I crossed paths with this book at a tabling event in New Haven last weekend. I was curious and excited to come across a book by a young local author. I read the first few chapters two nights ago, and then finished the whole thing in one sitting the next evening. I can't remember the last time a book kept me up until the wee hours of the morning like this! What a wonderful ride.
Read this if you enjoy: great characters and character development, action, adventure, giddying love/hate romance, and some awesome representation.
I absolutely loved reading a novel like this with a queer lead and queer themes. Violet's treatment of these are outstanding. Faelryi's anxiety disorder is also very well written and real. Great to see that kind of thing in a bad ass female heroine.
The lead character, Faelyri, is unlike any character I've come across in fantasy. She's anxious, empathetic, kind, scared, determined, witty, emotional, sheltered, immature, inquisitive, and she's just downright sweet. Not to mention a fricken bad ass! I really loved watching her journey and growth.
The novel is told from Faelyri's perspective. I'm a fantasy fan and generally read longer adult series (GoT, Malazan, Sanderson, etc), but I also appreciate a simpler story ala classic fairy tale, and this one is definitely not lacking in character or world building. Violet did a great job building a convincing and interesting world. It feels a little stilted at the beginning, when there is less action and more just general explaining to be done to catch us up with Faelryi and her world, but it hits it's stride around chapter 3-4 and really takes off from there. The reader learns as Faelyri learns, and every step of the journey adds new and interesting people and places to our Farfell encyclopedia. Her pacing was wonderful. I never felt lost or confused with the plot, politics, characters or geography. Even when I guessed a reveal or a plot development I still enjoyed watching it all play out. The syntax can be a little colloquial at times, but I didn't mind it in this novel because it suited Faelryi's character and even got some laughs out of me.
The characters are well thought out and unique. Their exchanges are top notch! I laughed out loud so many times. And the dynamic between the leads is just aaaaahhhhh!! Absolutely LOVED it, I felt like a kid with a crush again! I've drifted away from romance as I've gotten older, and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed one so darn much! Bravo Violet Wolfe 👏
Clem is an absolute gem of a character, stole my fricken soul I'm so into it. An attractive, mysterious, capable, knife wielding thief with a snarky attitude and a dark side?? Sign me the fuck UP. Love to hate him, love to love him. I also loved Zemm and Nesva. One is an orc and one is a dwarf, but Violet took these classic fantasy species and added her own fresh and fun spins to them. I look forward to seeing their backgrounds get more fleshed out in the books to come. I'm assuming they will be since Faelyri's has so many questions!
I could keep going on but I encourage you to take the plunge and read this one yourself. Support local! Support queer! Support good fucking books!
Good job Violet Wolfe, I really look forward to your future works! 🌿
