Safe for Now is Book 9 in the continuing struggle of the Mud Island Family against the Infected Dead. This is a story of individual determination as well as group efforts to bring mankind back from the brink of extinction.
There had been setbacks to the plans of opening the shelters to more survivors, but the discovery of the shelter in Huntsville and the return of the astronauts from the International Space Station had given the Mud Island family a reason to keep fighting to do more than just survive. They still believe that the infected dead are not going to be the end of mankind if they continue to find ways to help each other.
The Chief, Kathy, and the other veterans of the zombie apocalypse embark on a quest to help the astronaut from England to get home to his wife and children, and in doing so they discover that they aren’t the only ones fighting back. The world still faces a long road to recovery, and in some places disasters are yet to come, but they find through their journey that they are not alone.
The author Bob Howard (1951-) was born in New Jersey to parents who met in Germany during WW II. His father was from Ohio and his ancestors were from the UK. His mother was born in Romania. He grew up as an Army dependent, and lived overseas in Germany and Okinawa for most of his childhood.
Bob is a veteran of both the Navy and the Air Force and was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. He fell in love with the city and made it his home. As a graduate of the College of Charleston (1978) with a degree in Psychology, he has worked in the field of social services. Bob has lived and worked in Charleston, South Carolina for 25 years then moved to Columbia, South Carolina because of a promotion with his job for the last ten years. Bob will retire soon and will live in Charleston, South Carolina to be near his children.
Bob and his wife Dawn (College of Charleston 1979) have been married 31 years and raised a son and a daughter both born in Charleston, SC. Bob has finally reached a time when he can enjoy writing, and the zombie apocalypse is his favorite genre.
Bob Howard's passion has always been writing. Bob's book, Alive for Now (http://www.realbobhoward.com/), is his first installment to the science fiction post apocalyptic genre, and he wants nothing more than to know that his readers enjoy his work.
I had a love/hate relationship with this, the 9th installment of the Infected Dead series. In some ways this felt like an episode of Fantasy Island complete with your very one Dream Maker Concierge. I am so not a fan of that. But then the author creates an ending that makes the fantasy issue not such a big deal because the conclusion makes up for all of that. It was that good.
So I can forgive and forget....which brings this back up to 4 stars.
OMG OMG OMG hands down my favourite apocalyptic writer!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly, these books are the best. Characters who are smart well rounded, with a touch of quirky humour. The only horrible bit is the wait for the next book.
Another great installment! I love how Bob Howard really makes this world come alive and goes through the best case censorious of the zombie apocalypse. Always has me on the edge of my seat with if someone is going to die, and sometimes I’m pleasantly disappointed when no one does. So many times you get gut punched by authors that kill off favored characters, and it’s nice that this series hasn’t really killed off any of the main cast.
One thing I wish we would see is some LGBT representation, everyone’s so straight 😂 I know target audience is mainly straight white men for zompoc books, but that shouldn’t be the end all be all. I’d love to see someone like me in this series that I love so much.
This may also be just a personal gripe, but this installment entered another character that was supremely useful but then was immediately infatuated with the men of the cast. As much as I love Chief Barnes and Captain Miller, it’s a little weird when a love triangle is teased just to suggest that Andy should just go with the last single man of the group. Can we not add woman to the group just to be hooked up with the men? And vice versa? Don’t get me wrong, I love romance and the couples in here are great, but I swear everyone is just immediately in love with each other and it’s clear a new character added to the main cast is just to make another couple.
Other than that, I loved this book and love this series. Hoping the next two audiobooks come out soon so I can continue this series!
I am a huge dystopian and apocalypse book fan. I really really loved this series. It had so many consequences of an apocalypse that not many series writes about. From an influx of insects, rats and predators to what happens to astronauts on a mission. I loved all the characters and there wasn’t any characters that really annoyed me like other series has. Loved it

I am truly enjoying these books. The characters are interesting and fun. The storyline grabs hold and leaves me unwilling to put each one I read down. I look forward to many more. I think I would have adored Titus.
Wow, more excitement with the Mud Island Crew, heading all the way to England from America, another hard to put down book from Bob Howard, looking forward to number 10 in the series to see what happens next.
