When her phone rang, Diane Macklin wondered what her sister wanted now. Then, she heard that their mother was in the Emergency Room with a heart problem.
The doctor tending to her mother was Dr. Joe Adams, who was far from Diane’s idea of the family doctor. He had been alone since his first wife had died, and was apparently heaven-sent as a mate for Diane, if she could only get past the trauma of her previous near-miss at the altar.
The heart problem was hard to solve initially, the subsequent difficulty turned out to be murder, and affected the lives of both Diane and Joe.

This is a very short read. A novella of 90 pages. The reader shouldn't let the length be a turn-off on reading this medical mystery because it is worth the short time you'll spend reading it.
Retired physician, Richard L. Mabry, M.D. has written numerous full length books and a handful of novellas. Each tells a tale with a gold thread of accurate medical finesse woven throughout.
There is a lot packed into the 90 pages Mabry uses to solve this mystery. Not only is there a mysterious medical case, there is also a criminal case. But Mabry doesn't stop there with the excitement. As the book ends, we find there is another dastardly deed waiting to happen.
I think readers will enjoy picking up this novella and having a quick read.
I never cease to be amazed at the novels penned by this author. Being a physician himself makes the story more realistic and gripping. Some of the characters were grappling with losses in the area of relationships. Seeing the progression and development of these characters was very satisfying. Diane had a bad and somewhat embarrassing situation with an ex fiancée. Joe was recovering from the death of his wife a year ago. Even though friends, co-workers and family were encouraging them to give dating each other a try, there was some hesitation, especially on Diane’s part. Add to that the fact that she was her mother’s main caregiver and her mother had made several trips to the ER with heart problems, kept Diane indecisive. This fast read had all the exciting elements: Drama, romance, mystery and murder. I read it in one sitting trying to find out what happened, why and who! I enjoyed every word. Dr. Mabry gives a little taste of his next novel, More Than a Game, in the back. I’m looking forward to reading it. I must say that little tidbit has me intrigued. I received a complimentary ebook copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise. All opinions are strictly my own.
The first few lines of the story grabbed my attention and would not let go. I was particularly hooked when the cell phone vibrated and distracted the person. I had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. I almost felt that the romance brewing between the doctor and the ER nurse was an intentional distraction to keep the reader focused there rather than on the mystery that was building. Rather than risk giving something away, I will withhold further comment on that so each reader can draw their own conclusion. I liked the way the pieces of the puzzle were brought together to form a complete picture. The story was fast-moving and eventful. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
Another great book by Richard Mabry. I really enjoyed trying to figure who the perpetrator was and I just wasn't sure till the very end. But I won't tell you! You will just have to find out for yourself! And there was a romance along with the crime. So an all around good read that will keep you guessing! Being that the author is a retired medical doctor, he sure knows how to make a murder mystery real. What caused the unexplained death and who?
If you enjoy a great mystery, you will definitely enjoy this one!
I received an ebook copy from the author. All thoughts are my own.
This is a short novella written by the master of medical mysteries, Dr. Richard L. Mabry. Even though the pages were few, this book was crammed with plenty of mystery and intrigue. The author is, of course, very knowledgeable about medical terminology, so this makes his books more interesting to read. I had some suspicions, but there were a couple of twists that I did not see coming either. If you need a short read for a lazy day, this one will satisfy your need for a good mystery. It also had a little romance mixed in as well.
I enjoyed this book right to the very end. It even had a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. I enjoyed the medical setting, but would have liked a bit more of the medical scenes. There just weren't as many as I would have liked. Just enough romance. Clean mystery. Good to see references to God and going to church handled naturally, with grace and sincerity.
I caught the item that turned out to be the cause of a murder. Did the person doing it know what was happening. The family drama before and after the death and true colors were revealed. For their greed and saving face. A nice touch was the romance, the moments of them dating was slipped into the story. A good flowing plot that was a delight to read and keep your interest to the end.
It’s not a problem with your heart, but it may affect mine.
Relationships can be difficult, especially if they end in less than ideally. The author has highlighted several of these, but which relationship could and maybe would lead to murder? Well written with just enough medical detail to make it really interesting, this was a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Cute story written in a formal style. Good attention to detail , however , a lot of the story is missing . Nurse Diane a writer ? Unclear . Relationship with Dr Joe ? A few dates to being fianced. Not well defined . Seemed stilted to me . All in all , boring .
I like what the author is trying to do, and the story had some potential, but it fell flat. The editing mistakes really annoyed. Like almost an error on every page. I may try another by this author because I think there is some potential there.
This book was an interesting story about a nurse who falls for a doctor. But then her mother dies and the police begin an investigation into her death. If you read it you will find out what happens.
I've enjoyed several of Dr. Mabry's books in past years. This one was perfect for those wanting a quick read that is full of suspence with a little romance. Thank you to the author for a complimentary copy.
I love a story with a writer in it and this one captured my attention from the get-go. I enjoyed the budding romance between Dr. Joe Adams and Diane Maclin as they worked together to try and figure out who murdered Diane's mother. There are enough twists and turns in this fast-paced mystery to satisfy keep a reader guessing to the end.
It was a fast read for me, and Dr. Mabry's novella kept me turning pages until I finished!
'A homicide that doesn't show up on autopsy or toxicology. That's a mystery.
I've enjoyed Dr. Richard L. Mabry's books for quite a while. As a retired physician, he knows his stuff and makes medical mysteries seem real. This novella can be read quickly and will satisfy any mystery lover. It has a few twists, too. I enjoyed it very much.
Medical Mystery by Richard Mabry is an entertaining and suspenseful novella. The author does a great job of drawing the reader into the story right from the start and of keeping the reader's interest with a few twists and turns in the plot, a mysterious death, and a sweet romance too. A few clues here and there made me think about who the culprit might be but the author kept me guessing to the end. Bill Nesbitt does a great job of narration on the audiobook. His voice is easy to listen to and makes the listening experience a pleasant one. This engaging story is a good read for those who love a murder mystery. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
