A very technical book purposely written in layman's terms to give everyone an idea of life in the early American southwest.

I found this book in my Aunt Ruth's things after she passed away. Because I knew my Uncle John was mentioned in it, I bought the book. All this was more than a decade ago. I finally got around to reading it.

My aunt and uncle were my father's older sister and brother. Both were heavily involved in rock hounding in the 1950's up until their respective deaths. My uncle, John Cowles, excavated an Amerindian cave in South Central Oregon in the late 1950's. That was back BEFORE such activities were cause for long jail terms. He did his work according to the professional standards of the time and then privately published a book about it, "Cougar Mountain Cave".

Because my uncle was mentioned several times in this book, I finally got around to reading it. While it is dated in it's approach, I think "Stone Age in the Great Basin" stand up pretty well to the test of time. Of course, things have changed quite a bit in the field of archaeology since then, but given all that, it is still pertinent.

I found it interesting and I enjoyed all the black and white photos.
