The idea of hunting big game sounds amazing, but where do you even start? Can you just wander into the woods with a weapon and start shooting stuff? And how does that surprisingly large deer, elk, or bear walking around out there ultimately become a steak on your kitchen table? And before we even get to that, how can you find these animals in the first place? If you didn’t grow up in a hunting family and don’t have anyone to show you the ropes, it can seem impossible to figure it all out on your own. This book is written with you - the total beginner - in mind. Not that long ago, I was the guy who was captivated by big game hunting but had no idea what I was doing. I still remember all the “dumb questions” I was afraid to ask but needed answers to. This book will give you the foundation you need to go from absolutely zero hunting experience, to chasing critters out in the field (with plenty of awesome hunting stories throughout to get you fired up). Whether you’re hoping to hunt whitetail deer in the East or chase elk in the mountains out West, this book will walk you through all the steps involved in getting you geared up to go live your hunting dreams. Rifle, bow, Grandpa’s old shotgun...we’ll cover it all and make sure you’re prepared to take your first big game harvest home to your dinner table.
I believe this book accomplishes exactly what it set out to do. It is a quick and easy introduction to the art of hunting big game, either with bow or rifle. Yes, most of this info you can probably find online, and I would suggest you supplement the book with online content, particularly images and video for certain topics such as field dressing. However, if you just want to hit all the basics in one go, this is it.
It's not a long read, the font in the paperback version is fairly large I found myself paging through it quickly. The writing style is simple and conversational. No highly technical info here, which is great.
I loved not only the info but the personal stories Voris shared with his readers. It's one of those books where if you're a brand new hunter, it has some great information to get you started. Even if you're a novice with a few seasons under your belt, or even an intermediate hunter, there are some great reminders that I know I had at least forgotten since I last learned them.
Also, a very quick read, so I'm sure I'll be revisiting it next year before deer season.
