Blending humour and a sense of history, the narrator tells a family story that travels between Brooklyn, Florida and Europe. From the aunt who took the forbidden step of buying bacon for her daughters, to the uncle who kicked grapefruit trees, the characters portray emigre life on both continents.
There were some great anecdotes in this book that I enjoyed but as a novel it lacked the cohesion that I like in a story. It took me many pages to clearly differentiate between the different characters and the disjointed nature of the short chapters made it difficult to find the flow in the story. Having said that, sections of the writing were wonderfully written and I feel that I should have enjoyed this book more than I did.
