Although the reappearance of the Alpha Centauri I crew was miraculous, it was not the celebratory homecoming they expected. Their return to a world reeling from a pandemic that wiped out more than half the population thrust them right into the center of controversy and conflict. Now, three years later, though the tide has turned and the survival of the human race seems to be secure, the survival of human relations is far less certain. The cure should have been the injection of hope the world needed to restore balance and end the chaos of the last four decades. Instead, the complex implications for personal rights and freedom have fractured the North American territory in such a way that the division may never be repaired. As the crew dispersed to find their place in this new landscape, Hunter Young found himself embedded in the Marshall administration as an agent for the mysterious K Group. What had been a relatively uneventful assignment suddenly becomes a whirlwind of adventure as he is called to a rendezvous that requires a long and circuitous journey.
You need to read these books in order by starting out with The Way Out. As the events in this book are the aftermath from the first book. Which boy has the world changed. It is now the New World Order. The USA is divided into different "zones". The red and blue. Where the poverty levels are different as well with some having lower taxes.
This book plays into the politics of current events of today in the real world. So, it was easy to believe that the events in this book were happening. While post-apocalyptic stories are fiction, it is easy to imagine that our world could look like this in the future. I did like this book better than the first.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Two Roads to Paradise carried on three years after the finale of The Way Out. Readers will see precisely how divided the world has become: land and viewpoints. Yeah, we are pretty divided now in our views.
The book discusses free health care in the blue zones and how red zones have better taxes. It talks about gun control and abortion rights, which we all know are hot topics right now. I imagine they’ll be major talking points for many more decades to come.
Gordon Bensen and Cara Highsmith (co-authors) created unique maps located in the front and back flap. These maps show 13 zones and their colors: red and blue. Yup, those are the same colors that represent Democrats and Republicans. Don’t worry about memorizing the zones because they will be introduced again through colorful welcome signs. I love those, btw!
Two Roads to Paradise was slower going and didn’t hold my interest compared to its predecessor, The Way Out. However, I did enjoy reading about people’s viewpoints regarding the “governing” of the various zones.
Oh, a shocking and disturbing bombshell unveiled by two teen girls to Hunter on their trek to NOLA. It shows how inhumane a person or group can be. I’d love to tell you what, but I want to discover it for yourself.
With any government or country, there will be individuals who deflect and fight the system. The Resistance was comprised of a couple of shocking members. Again, no spoilers.
While this book didn’t knock my socks off, it ended with me wanting more. So, with that said, I will be tuning in for book three because I have to see how the final moments play out in the next installment.
I recently read Two Roads to Paradise by Gordon Jensen and Cara Highsmith which is the sequel to The Way Out. While this book is very different from the previous book that I read in the series, it is a very interesting read that brought up some questions for me as to how political I like my books.
This book picks up a couple of years after where the last book ended and so it was nice to see what the characters had all gotten up to since we heard from them last. As the synopsis says, this book covers a journey Hunter, one of the main characters, takes but when I honestly expected there to be more to the book than just that journey. Two Roads to Paradise is slower-paced than the last book which I struggled to adjust to as I was expecting it to have the same pace and intensity as the first book. The perk of the slower pace is that it gave the authors a lot of time to show the reader what the world has turned into as Hunter travels through the country.
As I touched on in my review of The Way Out these books seem to cross over a lot of politics into their stories which is something that I don't always enjoy as I sometimes read to avoid what is going on in the world. Because of the way this book is written with slower pacing, each person that Hunter meets in his travels shows their perspective on how the world is set up and the issues with either side. It is interesting to see how either side of the political spectrum taken to the extreme affects the people who live in each area as that is not something that I always think about. While it was still a little too much politics for me, I still did appreciate the way that it was done and how it was tied into the story.
Overall, this book was an enjoyable sequel and I can't wait to get my hands on book 3!
I received a review copy of this book for free, and I am reviewing this voluntarily.
The Alpha Centour1 crew had all been dispersed back into society in the various countries they originated from. In this new female dominated world, the men of the crew were a commodity. Hunter was assigned as a personal consultant to President Marshall. He was assigned an assistant, Cody, who was a spy for the Resistance.
He and Major Lydia Statham had been apart for a year while she went "underground" to assist the Resistance. The last time he heard from her, she was in Maine. Now she has asked that he join her in Nevada but she couldn't say why. Because of the trust they had built the past two years, he agreed. The problem was, how does he evade the government security measures to get to her undetected?
They concocted a plan which sent him on several journeys until he was able to meet up with her. the action does not stop there. His son and many other characters are further introduced in this second book of the series.
The individuals in the "Resistance" have made some shocking discoveries. Can world peace continue as it is? Or will human greed and weaknesses once again arise?
As the series continues, it will be interesting to discover the answer to these questions and more.
This is an unusual dystopian series. Although this second one is very good, I enjoyed the first book of the series more. I liked the unique format. I also, felt the main content of this second one lacked depth. Additionally, I couldn't make a connection from the title with the story. The cover image is okay and may attract the "eye of the browser:.
*Caution: this does contain a few words of profanity and foul language
I offer a Four Stars rating for this book.
This book was gifted me with no pressure to post a positive review. This is my honest review.
Readers should read the series in order. While you could read the first book without needing to continue the series--you should read that first book first to help ease into this second book. Two Roads to Paradise introduces some new characters and follows different roads and political perspectives as the world continues with the changes and developments from book one.
Two Roads to Paradise continues the series' political storyline. While the premise of the novel and the series holds science fiction and dystopian elements as the characters move through their journeys in the post-pandemic aftermath, it is even far more political and social in theme than the first book. Red and Blue (Republican and Democrat) views and ideas serve as the focus--but the writing style did lend to the presentation of both viewpoints from different characters and encounter perspectives.
Would I Recommend Two Roads to Paradise? If you enjoy political novels developed via a fantasy world that mirrors current reality--this novel may suit you well. I found this novel a bit slower-paced than the first--and more political than I had realized it would be. Having said that, I did find the presentation of different political views interesting, and the dystopian novel fan in me enjoyed watching the characters rebuild lives and regroup amid the changes.
I received a copy of this book for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.
“TWO ROADS TO PARADISE” - BOOK 2 OF “BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR” SERIES BY GORDON JENSEN AND CARA HIGHSMITH
The book is set three years following the return of the Alpha Centauri I crew. When they return to a world that is suffering the aftermath of a pandemic, living in complete chaos, the members of the crew get dispersed throughout the new landscape of the world. Meanwhile, Hunter becomes involved in a secret mission led by the “k group” and begins on his journey to uncover new secrets.
Pros: A lot of creative and original content which makes it a good political thriller. When it doesn’t completely feel continuous with part 1 of the book, it still maintains relevance to it. Use of maps with description in between chapters helps to visualise the written concept. The book is a dystopian fiction with an original concept involving recent events.
Cons: I found the book to be very slow paced that I struggled to finish it towards the end. The author definitely needs to work on the humour part. There were so many loopholes in the story like, too many fortunate incidents and how they kept on cracking secret codes like it’s nobody’s business. That felt like a stretch and quite unbelievable.
Two Roads to Paradise is the second book in the Be Careful What You Wish For series, and I was so excited to read it! Lucky for me, I was able to start it as soon as I finished book 1, The Way Out!
This book picks up a few years after the first book ends. I would recommend reading The Way Out before picking this one up, so you aren’t lost. Now that the world has stabilized the rebuilding of the human race, they have to turn their focus to rebuilding everything else. The story follows the characters from the first book as they set out on their individual adventures to help with this task.
I enjoyed the more dystopian feel of this story. It’s been a few years since the human race was almost wiped out, and now the people have to set about restabilizing their lives. I always enjoy these types of stories, and this one didn’t let me down!
I really think that readers of post-apocalyptic stories are going to enjoy this series. I would definitely recommend it!
I was provided a gifted copy of this of book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Two Roads to Paradise: A Novel is the second book from the Be Careful What You Wish For series by Gordon Jensen with Cara Highsmith.. This is not from my usual genre that I usually go to when I want to find something new to read. However, I enjoyed reading the first book in the series, The Way Out: A Novel and wanted to see what it was going to happen next in the series. Just like book one, the plot is different and one that I could not be compare to another story I have ever read. The concept and structure of the book is unique and intriguing. This one does cover quite a bit of current controversial topics, politics, and the divisions that I would rather try to escape from when reading a book, but it was interesting how the authors used their imagination on how to deal with it. Though this one did not hold my attention as The Way Out: A Novel, it was still worth reading.
I am giving Two Roads to Paradise: A Novel three stars. I believe readers who enjoy reading books from the science fiction genre. I will be looking for more books from the Be Careful What You Wish For series in the future.
I received a paperback copy of Two Roads to Paradise: A Novel from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
