Limonov's works are noted for their cynicism. His novels are also memoirs, describing his experiences as a youth in Russia and as émigré in the United States

Limonov's Kharkov is fascinating. He gets involved with an early credit scam and hangs out at the Automatic Snackbar and regularly sneaks into the zoo. His friends break into the camel enclosure to play Tuareg raiders and Lawrence of Arabia. Another friend goes for a swim in the hippo enclosure, and they end up running from the trashes. Limonov gets shot at by his girlfriend's father and tries to commit suicide while reading Stendhal, is committed to an asylum, escapes and is convinced him to turn himself in, he gets tortured with insulin and his friends start harassing the institution until they can find a face-saving way to let him go. He works as a bookseller and accidentally becomes a tailor to impress his girl after leaving a job at a foundry and works on his poetry and drinks and contemplates moving to Moscow.

Read John Dolan's english translation, titled A Young Scoundrel, available online through Deep South, the literary journal from the University of Otago. There are 17 chapters available, but I don't think that's the entire book (goodreads lists it as 366 pages, while Dolan's translation is probably closer to 100, though maybe it's due to the translation? I have no idea).

В своих книгах Эдуард Лимонов выглядит куда симпатичнее, чем в жизни. Противоречивая, но небезынтересная личность. Биография у него ведь - закачаешься. Жизнь уж точно прожита не скучно. А ведь вроде как ничего в детстве-отрочестве не предвещало. Как по мне, так книга великолепная. И Харьков оказался таким привлекательным, что мне сразу захотелось туда. И советские богемные тусовщики, и их блеск и нищета, и традиционный авторский стриптиз - язык сочный, характеристики точные. Читалось на одном дыхании, помещено в разделы "Любимые книги" и "Перечитать". Как-то так.

По замыслу – роман-энциклопедия из жизни харьковского андерграунда 60-х, по воплощению – набор жанровых сцен, перемежающихся глубокомысленными рассуждениями. Герой болтается между творческой интеллигенцией и криминальным миром, пьет, шьет и ищет женской любви. Сюжет отсутствует. Качество текста – на две звезды, прибавлю третью за атмосферность.

Intéressant de lire sur l'URSS de cette époque. Malheureusement il y a trop de personnages que l'on survole à peine et l'histoire est contée de façon anecdotique sans aucune chronologie. Même les allers-retours dans le temps perdent de leur intérêt lorsque l'on se rend compte que cela ne sert pas le roman. Après 100-150 pages de ce désordre sans fil conducteur, j'ai fini par décrocher.
