He'll do anything it takes to return to the life he led and the girl he loves.
James' life ends amidst crushed metal and flashing sirens. But when his soul is transported back to the familiar hallways of his New Orleans high school, he remembers nothing of his tragic end. As he struggles to make sense of his new existence, he learns that there are others like him, ghosts who haunt the school, who claim they are there to protect the students and the precarious balance between life and death. James only knows that he misses his girlfriend, Margot. He spends his days watching over her as she grieves his loss. Desperate to reconnect with her, he begins leaving her notes within the pages of her favorite book. But there are consequences to his interference, and when James learns there may be a way to return to the living, he makes it his mission to reunite with Margot, no matter the cost.
First of all, big thank you to Laura for sending me a copy to read! I very much enjoyed reading this one, and I finished it all in one day!
James misses his girlfriend, and would do anything to get back to her, even if that means upsetting the normal order of things. This paranormal romance was very well written, and even poses questions to the reader on a “what would you do” basis.
Great character development, I was pulled into the book in the first chapter. It was enthralling and hard to put down. I hope this is only a first in a series for these characters. James and Margo, I look forward to following you both and seeing how Laura Michaud develops your characters in upcoming books. Though written for young adults, I think adults will also enjoy, like I did.
Great character development for the 1st in a series. Enthralling and difficult to put down. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the subsequent volumes. Very interesting for readers interested in contemplating the paranormal. Highly recommend for YA and adult readers.
This book is nothing but captivating from the beginning on! I could’t put it down and finished it in one sitting. Loved the fascinating storyline and the engaging characters. Well written! Highly recommend!
3.5 stars, really. The book pulled me in quickly and was very interesting. I sometimes struggled with the different font used for Margot’s chapters. I liked the story, but a few big things were left unanswered, so I hope the author intends to come out with a sequel.
The Ghostwriter of New Orleans is a well-written story with a unique twist on ghosts. After James is killed in a car accident, he quickly learns he’s going to be stuck at his high school as a ghost for a very, very long time. He, along with three other ghosts, are given the assignment to play guardian angels to the other students at the school. But James can’t stop thinking about his girlfriend, Margot, who he left behind. And it doesn’t help that he sees another guy start to show interest in her. My favorite part of the book is the creative way James finds to communicate with Margot, by underlining passages of her favorite book, The Great Gatsby. She catches on and underlines passages in response. When James discovers there may be a way back to the living and reuniting with his girlfriend, he stops at nothing to find his way back. A few things are left unanswered, making me assume this may be the beginning of a series. Check it out if you’re into paranormal with a contemporary YA feel!
This book ended sort of abruptly for me. I feel like it could have been a larger book if it had gone through the consequences of Ali and James’ actions. They threw off the natural order of things and it seemed like the author was okay with that just for lovers to reunite. Most of the book was a tragedy and navigating grief which I did find interesting. It definitely made me shed a few tears.
