Desperate and determined to rekindle a once dynamic and romantic spark, a sailor (and her two beagles) depart on a bucket-list adventure of a lifetime—a worldwide sailing journey that will take them from north Germany to south Alabama. In Book 1 of Living Life Sideways, she must face the obstacles of sailing a 43-foot steel ketch through some of the world’s most challenging bodies of water—including the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Bay of Biscay, and an unbelievable Atlantic Ocean crossing.
The epic seasickness and struggles with learning to how to live life sideways seem insurmountable until she is faced with the real battle that lies deep within a sailor’s soul. Now, she must find a way to navigate the reality of her greatest fears and her worst nightmares.
A graduate of Auburn University, Michelle has spent more than three decades reporting about everything from sports to courts, lifestyles to business, politics to pastries, and technical to travel. She works from her home office on Alabama's Gulf Coast and has two children (Shelby and Bo) and two beagles (Cap’n Jack and Scout).
In 2015, after more than 25 years of experience as an award-winning journalist, Michelle founded Navigate Content with two specific goals in mind—to continue to develop intriguing content for the industry she loves while also being the captain of her own ship.
In her spare time, she loves tennis, sailing, geocaching, traveling off the beaten path, true-crime podcasts, and enjoys books and movies from all genres. She hates mayonnaise and animals dressed in people clothes.
Life on a 20-degree Tilt is a book that keeps you turning the pages, curious to find out what will happen next to the bright-orange boat and its crew. The author did a good job finishing each chapter with a bit of tension and foreshadowing and her tales and sailing experiences are gripping. Especially her personal relationship struggles kept me engaged.
The descriptions about the sailing life and her seasickness, emotions, and feelings are accurate and compelling. I could often relate, but this book made me realize I’d never want to sail in Northern Europe, or on a monohull, after eight years of fulltime cruising on a catamaran in the tropics. I would like to suggest the author tries this out, next time, but then she’ll have to rename her book series. :)
While I generally enjoyed reading this book, diary-style writing is not my preferred style when reading memoirs. For that reason and some editing inconsistencies I’m giving the book four instead of five stars.
The story is amazing! Not only did it touch the heart of a person who loves the water in many ways (however, I couldn’t phantom taking the voyage she did!) but it resonated in my soul with the same situations she had found herself in.
Living with the type of partner she had, a narcissistic type of person, is similar to what I had experienced in my own life. The journey she started out on with him was already set up for challenges, but more occurred than she was expecting. And though it cut her, and she didn’t realize the pain, she still tugged onward.
It’s a great story about sea life, and the challenges she said, but it also showcased her own personal struggle and the challenges she faced with those.
If you’re looking for a book about sea life, sure, look this way and enjoy her journey and the fears she faced and overcame. If you are looking for the mental and emotional battle that comes with dealing with that type of personality and sharing with someone who has the same issues as you, look this way! Trust me, you won’t be disappointed, I never was.
Wow. What an inspiring book. You will want to abandon your life to sail across the ocean very soon. What if you could see a whale three times the size of the sailboat you were on? Would you be willing to leave your home and family to live your dream of sailing the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and the Bay of Biscay? What if your captain was a lousy teacher who often yelled at you? Could you fight the fog and keep the boat moving, or would you drop anchor for the day? After making it through that rough terrain, the English Channel tried to take Michelle Segrest and the captain down again and again. Michelle’s strength inspired me. This feisty woman doesn’t stop for anything, even when she loses a toenail. Pick up your copy and sail the high seas, and you will be booking a trip somewhere to the many beautiful places she brings to life with her vivid details. I read this entire book in one sitting because I couldn’t wait to read the end.
I hate it when I get to the end of a book and don't have the next in the series to begin immediately. The story is compelling and had me from the very beginning. Excellent.
