A mystical Standing Stone from the dawn of time. An art teacher who has taken a year off to find peace in the Yorkshire Dales. A frumpy librarian looking for the love that has eluded her all her life. .An aristocratic professor of archaeology on a mission to save the Stone. A journey from the Winter darkness to the warmth of Summer. * Annie hopes to find the peace she craves in the village of Winterfell but gets off to a bad start with the professor, Kit Courtney, who is more good-looking than any professor has the right to be. Yet her involvement in the friendly community and the welcome from her lovely neighbours convinces her that this was a good move, even if she does get snowed in not long after her arrival. . Add to this a homeless sheepdog, a Druid and boisterous celebrations of both Christmas and Midsummer's Eve and you have a joyful, feelgood story to warm the cockles of your heart.
This was potentially a four star read but it was marred by the terrible editing to the extent that I had to read a number of sentences several times to try to figure out what was meant. It became incredibly frustrating and very distracting.
A real shame as it was shaping up to be quite a good book, bit of romance, bit of intrigue but an absolute ton of typos. Disappointing.
I just loved this book and was sad when I finished it. Don’t get me wrong you are not going to learn any life lessons just a lovely story about a lady called Annie who is an illustrator of children’s books who moves to an area called Winterfell in North Yorkshire to rent a cottage for a year. She meets a host of locals who all have their own stories including Minerva who runs the local library and what is the association with the large stone in the field that the local, angry farmer is so determined to stop people visiting?
Yet again another five star read from the great author Susanna Scott.
A recent author I have stumbled upon and so far I have thoroughly enjoyed her books.
Annie has chosen to move away and give up her current life. She finds a beautiful cottage to rent in a little village called Winterfell where the locals make her feel very welcome even after she makes some judgements about the locals before truly knowing them.
Whilst Annie is busy illustrating her best friends children's books she finds herself get involved with the local library and the local stone circle group which is trying to preserve the ancient Winterfell Stone currently on the land of a very unhappy farmer who likes to make things for the group very hard.
Kit who is one of locals helped by Annie and many of the other locals, takes on the fight for the Winterfell Stone and the right to who owns it and the land that surrounds it.... will the locals win, will Annie find love in the village and will the initial year she was meant to stay for be extended??
A great cosy, easy warm read. Again it got me from page one and yet again I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A straightforward story, like a cozy room with a good fire and perhaps a glass of wine. You can snuggle into this book and enjoy an undemanding read. No.... I'm not knocking it, either!!
I liked the snippets about modern day Druids, monuments and standing stones. For anyone who has felt the presence of these monuments up close will easily relate to this story....
A good, simple read that you can get through and enjoy as a relief from deeper writings. I enjoyed it!!
The characters in this book would be your ideal neighbours in a village and although this may seem fluffy, this is really engaging, particularly the interesting ideas about Druidism and how the narrative is woven around the Winterfell stone. I quite fancy being a Druid now, or at least inspired to read around it!
Susanna, gives a warning when you read the book info. the info is basically if you're looking blood and gore then basically this book may not be for you. All I can say is turn the page and get totally emerged in the village life, it's battle to get to be able to use the winterfell stone and the friendships made, loved the humour
Nice storyline with good characters. However I couldn't give it more stars because I was irritated throughout the book by the sad lack of proof reading - so many errors that I had to re-read sentences and correct them in my head so as to make sense of them. Such a shame.
This book from start to finish was a lovely read.. The storyline was just what was needed and the characters came to life with each passing page. Thank you to the author for an enthralling book.
A lovely cosy read that can be done in an afternoon. Only a 3 star rating though as the editing is awful. I had to re read some bits to make sense of what was going on and who was saying what to whom.
I don't normally go for "romantic" novels and I chose this blind as I only saw the title, however, I did enjoy the story. Well written and nicely paced. I liked the characters and their back stories. I would recommend for a light, easy read.
I loved this heartwarming story, all the characters were so believable. The story just drew you in, that in the end you felt you to would like to live there. A lovely book
A holiday read romp, with a fairly predictable plot set in North Yorkshire. Shame about the proof reading, too many typos, spelling mistakes and poor grammar.
