Georg Büchner's (1813-1837) literary oeuvre contains numerous reminiscences of the knowledge he gleaned at school, notably in history, philosophy, classical literature and art, German literature, art history, and natural history. On the basis of the uniquely extensive material that has come down to us from his schooldays (in exercise books amounting to almost 700 pages), the sources of that material, and the schoolbooks used at his grammar school in Darmstadt, the study reconstructs and documents the subject matter dealt with in class and the developments of Büchner's work techniques.
