Change can be difficult, especially for Savanna. When she gets a new trainer at a new barn, she can't help thinking about how much she'll miss Colts & Company. More than that...she's a little scared. What will happen when Savanna swallows her fear and takes a chance on Happenstance Farms?
A fun, relatable story about a girl and her pony, your child will love keeping up with the adventures at Happenstance Farms. With charming characters, lots of laughs, and social-emotional learning, this book is the perfect addition to any home or classroom library.
Change often involves a momentous transition, and having to come to terms with the unpredictability of a new path leads to anxiety. As human beings, we value familiarity and routine. So it is for little Savannah, in S. McMichael’s invigorating picture book, “Happenstance Farms: A New Home.”
Savannah, a young girl, had been training horse riding at Colts & Company and had made lots of friends. When her old trainer moves out of town, her mother enrolls her at Happenstance Farms with a new trainer, Miss Ellen. The little girl is sad and anxious as she drives with her mother to her new training grounds. Her only consolation is seeing her pony, Coffee. Despite her mother’s efforts to cheer her up, Savannah’s mood remains unchanged. Upon arriving and spending her first day in the new place, the young girl realizes that her fears and doubts were unfounded as she begins unlikely friendships.
McMichael deftly captures Savannah’s step-by-step journey from familiarity to newness without a single wasted sentence. Tapping into the themes of people’s connections among themselves and with animals, the empathetic tone present will inevitably touch the heart and soul of every child who reads this gem. Also, artist Borrero ably presents the young protagonist’s surroundings. The vibrant colors are delightful and small details like the animals on the farm, the lush display of the pastures, and vivid illustrations of the equestrians’ stables, create a comprehensive and convincing intermediary read.
Further, the educative aspect of the book is easy to decode for its target audience. Not only is this text written for pure escapist entertainment but it also carries along with it an enduring moral lesson. Children are encouraged to step confidently out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. Savannah is a charming and well-sculptured protagonist that young readers will effortlessly identify with. Her dedication and kind heart make it easy for young minds to connect with her. The author presents each character and mood in her well-wrought phrases inviting readers to pore over this lighthearted yarn.
“Happenstance Farms: A New Home” by S. McMichael is a 5-Star read. The writing is lyrical, the word choice meritorious and the imagery stellar. It is a clever springboard for children in a classroom setting to share their experiences with change.
If you have a child who loves horses, then this picture book is a great step into reading and perfect for those young horse lovers who aren't quite at Saddle Club, Canterwood Crest, and Pony Pals level. Happenstance Farms: A New Home is also a great read if you are moving houses and to a new area where your child doesn't know anyone and has to start over and make new friends. Growing up, we moved a lot and by the time I was 18, I had lived in 20 different houses. Whereas my sister didn't mind, as she was extroverted and made friends easily, I was the opposite and struggled which is why I don't have close friends to this day. Savanna has moved to a new home and feeling beside herself and worried and her new horse etc will become her trusted confidant and her new friend while she settles into the new house and routine with her new horse trainer etc. In the end, Savanna can't believe how she was scared for nothing. This picture book is perfect for children aged 5-9 years old. The illustrations in this book also are very bright, colorful, and vibrant which makes an even better story as each page is full color.
Happenstance Farms – A New Home is a sweet and simple children’s story that centers on Savannah, a young girl who, after her old trainer moves out of town, is uneasy about meeting a new trainer and going to a new horse barn.
The full-page illustrations in this book are so cute! I don’t know who is more adorable, Savannah or the German Shepherds that greet her at Happenstance Farms. The illustrator captures Savannah’s emotions well in her very expressive face, and I just want to take the little pup, Eli, home with me.
I like how Savannah faces her fears and uncertainties. With the support of her mother nearby, she begins her routines in the new environment and even meets a new friend. She learns that the people at the new farm are friendly and soon feels like she belongs.
This story is sure to be enjoyed by animal lovers—especially those who are fond of horses and dogs. The book delivers a sweet story about dealing with change and facing uncertainty with courage and brings comfort to young readers that they are not alone in their worries or fears.

I was granted complimentary access to Happenstance Farms as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with iRead Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Happenstance Farms is a short picture book about Savanna's move to a new barn and her experience settling in with a new trainer, new fellow students, and new animals. This would be appropriate for pre-K audiences as a read-aloud book or for slightly older young readers who are on the verge of progressing to middle grade levelled readers and chapter books. It doesn't have the most flashy, exciting plot so it will probably go over best with kids who love animals, especially horses, and just want more horse stories. As a horse-crazy woman who used to be a horse-crazy kid, I would have ate this book up in grades one or two! My own nearly-kindergartner? Not interested, walked away before I was done my preliminary read through. Too many words for this impatient kid.
In terms of illustrations, I'm torn on how to review this. I'm an illustrator myself, and as I've already mentioned, a lover of horses. My general impression of the book is that the illustrations are colourful, detailed, and intricate, and I think the intended age group audience will love them. The people, backgrounds, dogs, and birds are consistent and gorgeous. The people are a little more cartoony while everything else is painterly and the contrast is interesting to look at. Then there's the horses. It's obvious that this artist did not come into this project already confident with horses, but the range in accuracy and appeal of the different horse illustrations is offputting to me as a fellow illustrator. Some are disproportionate or have too-big, too-human eyes while others look like the unfinished underpainting of a photorealistic portrait. It looks like reference photos were painted over in an attempt to get the shapes and shadows right and then an attempt was made to put the same style of finishing details over top as the people and dogs, and the final effect is that they just don't quite fit the rest of the image.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
No matter the age, people experience first-day jitters. We fear, as being the newbie, if people will like us. We wonder if we’ll fit in. When we start a new school, class, job, etc., insecurities surface. In Happenstance Farms: A New Home by S. McMichael, Savanna faced fears upon her first day at the new farm.
No matter where your “first day” happens to be, no matter your age, you might encounter emotions like Savanna. This book will create a perfect opportunity to ask your child(ren) if and when they’ve experienced first-day jitters and how they handled them.
For teachers, maybe read Happenstance Farms: A New Home on the first day of school when many students feel uneasy. Ask students if they’ve ridden a horse before or live(d) on a farm. Happenstance Farms: A New Home can also be read before taking a field trip to a farm.
As for my house, we plan on taking riding lessons this coming summer, so this is the perfect book for my home. Even if we weren’t planning the equestrian event, this book would be a welcomed addition to our library. We enjoyed the story and the lovely illustrations by Justo Borrero. Coffee, the horse, was pretty and Eli, the German Shepherd, was adorable. We loved how expressive Eli was in all the images. You could almost see him bouncing off the pages, excited to play with Savanna.
Happenstance Farms : A New Home is a wonderful and sweet story about a little girl named, Savanna. Because of her horse trainer moved away, she and her horse had to go to another barn to train. She is at first sad at the change but quickly met new friends – human and furry - along the way. Eli, the german shepherd pup was so fun to see. I thought it was a cute tale that shows readers that changes can still bring you many smiles and new adventures.
Happenstance Farms : A New Home is illustrated by the talented artist, Justo Borrero. The pictures are colorful and vivid. They perfectly follow story and help bring the characters to life. They help the story flow and make it easy for younger readers stay focused on the story.
Happenstance Farms : A New Home is getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of three and nine. It would be a great addition to a classroom’s reading shelf, as well as, the local library. I would love to add more books by S McMichael to add to my children’s personal shelf. I can not wait to read the next book in the Happenstance Farms series.
I received a soft cover copy of Happenstance Farms : A New Home from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Excellent Book For Children Facing New Experiences. Change is challenging--and a little scary sometimes--no matter your age. Readers will love Savanna and her story as she worries a bit about changing to a new riding teacher and a new farm away from her old friends and familiar surroundings. The author gives readers a wonderful book for children facing new places or situations of their own with lovely illustrations and relatable pages.
Happenstance Farms: A New Home is Perfect for Animal Lovers. Savanna loves her horse--and makes a new friend in farm puppy Eli. This book is the perfect reminder of the bonds between humans and animals, especially when fearful or worried about an upcoming change.

The author introduces readers to the Happenstance Farms series and characters in this book--and it is a perfect blend of setting and characters to create future relatable life lessons for children and families to enjoy. I don't really know anybody who likes change and is not a little bit fearful of it. Some changes are for the better, but sometimes change happens when everything was going just fine. Then what? This story shows us how one little girl goes through such one and how it ends up.
Savanna must now take lessons riding her pony Coffee at a new place, Happenstance Farms. She has some trepidation as she really liked her other instructor, but that instructor moved away. Now Savanna will be going someplace new for riding lessons and she kind of feels like she is starting over. What about her friends and is she at the same skill level with the other riders? Or will they feel she is holding them back? Savanna gets these questions answered and learns valuable life lessons along the way.
The book was beautifully illustrated, and the lessons inside should help any child dealing with change. I personally don't like change so I could definitely relate to Savanna and her fears. And this book has the cutest little German Shepherd character in it. He was just too cute.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Aww how cute were the illustrations in this. Made me feel all sorts of sad when you could see that Savanna wasn’t at all happy at the start of the book mind. But in no time you understand that Savanna is nervous and worries and anxious about her new trainer. I loved the horses name ‘coffee’ one of my favourite things.
I can remember being a kid and feeling nervous around older children. So really emotionally connected to Savanna. The messages throughout this book for children is warming and especially good to read if they’re starting anything new that might cause them to worry. The relationship between Savanna and her mother was so warming. I adore horses and found the illustrations were beautiful with the jumping.
The only negative was this ended too quickly I wanted to know more about Savanna, her new friend as they ended on such a high playing with the puppy Eli. Such a cute adorable read. Loved this. Was so glad Savanna ended up realising there was nothing to worry about at all.
Savanna is a horse lover, but her days of riding her pony and training with Mrs. Kylin are over. Now she has to get used to a new trainer and a new home for Coffee, and she's feeling afraid and uncertain. Will there be anyone else her age? Will she feel out of place at Happenstance Farms? Will she be able to keep up with the other riders?
This is a charming story with a likable little girl, her special pony, and an adorable dog who's eager to become her new friend. Author S. McMichael shares easy-to-read text and the vivid illustrations by Justo Borrero make the story jump off the page! Happenstance Farms: A New Home is a perfect book for young horse lovers, and it's also a great way to show that change isn't always bad. I'll gladly share it with my eight-year-old granddaughter, and I'll be looking for more stories about Happenstance Farms.
I received a copy of this book from the author via iRead Book Tours. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
What will Savannah do when her horse trainer moves out of town and her barn closes? S. McMichael in Happenstance Farms: A New Home has the answer. Find new ones! The prospect of change is scary for the young girl. Will she like her trainer? Will her trainer like her? Will her pony, Coffee, like the new barn? Will Savannah make new friends? So many questions. Will she find the answers?
At Happenstance Farms, Miss Ellen and her pup Eli make Savannah feel at home immediately. All her fears disappear when she mounts Coffee for her skill level evaluation. When she is on Coffee, she feels like nothing in this world matters except for them—soaring around the ring and over the jumps.
Putting Coffee in the barn, she meets Sophia, who warmly welcomes her—a great beginning to her new adventure. This book will appeal to young children with like-minded interests. They will finish the story wanting to learn more about Savannah and Happenstance Farms.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from iRead Book Tours. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
Savanna is going to visit Happenstance Farms for the first time. Her trainer moved so they had to find a new home for her pony where Savanna could continue training. At first, she’s apprehensive but once she meets her new trainer and she makes a couple of new friends, she thinks she’s going to like it here.
It’s fun to watch Savanna get to know Happenstance Farms. The illustrations in this picture book are gorgeous, and they bring the story alive. The colors are rich and vibrant.
There is also a lesson to be learned in Happenstance Farms: A New Home that even though change is scary, it is important to face it and take a chance because change is often good.
The story is great as well as the awesome illustrations! This is a wonderfully entertaining story o a horse being located on a new training farm and of a young girl's anxiety over going to a different place with new surroundings and new people to train her horse for performances. Seeing new scenery and meeting new people can be fun! The story is written well, yet even if it wasn't a great story, the gorgeous, brightly colored illustrations by Justo Borrero are worth buying the book for. The suggested age range for this book is estimated to be from 3 to 7 years of age. I definitely recommend an increased age range to be 3 to 9 years of age. Mid to older elementary are sure to enjoy this book as well as younger children. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.
This glossy paperback has lovely heavy pages and beautiful illustrations. This story is one that all little girls will love, because the main character, Savanna, has her own horse. Her horse, Coffee, is being moved to a new barn because her old teacher is no longer working. Savanna is very nervous to go to a new barn where she doesn’t know anyone. Her mother takes her to Happenstance Farms to meet her new riding instructor and see where Coffee is now living. She’s very excited to meet two new dogs when she arrives and they are very friendly. But, will she be able to make new friends there? Children will love the sweet story and they’ll be inspired to try something new.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Happenstance Farms: A New Home, authored by S. McMichael and illustrated by Justo Borrero is a beautiful picture book.
It’s a simple tale about a young girl & her horse moving to a new training stable. With the move, doubts begin to plague Savanna. Will she fit in, make new friends, like her teacher, and be happy at the new farm?
The story touches on fears and doubts many young children have, whether it’s starting a new hobby or attending a new school.
Follow along while Savanna & her horse, Coffee make new friends and learn that change isn’t always a bad thing.
I received a copy of the book for a tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
This is a cute book about making friends in new places. Savanna’s relationship with her horse Coffee and Eli, a German Shephard pup is sure to melt your heart. If your child loves horses, this book is a “must read.”
I know children everywhere share Savanna’s nervousness in moving to a new place. But they can soon learn that change can be fun.
The illustrations are colorful and bring the story to life. Each page is like a snapshot of a live action moment.
Happenstance Farms was a fun short story for a horse enthusiastic girl. It's nice to have a book when you're trying to get your child to relate to a situation. Studies show that if they read it in a story they understand it better than an adult trying to explain it to them. This story was descriptive with bright illustrations that would be pleasing to a horse loving child.
Savanna was going to a new farm called Happenstance. At first, she was scared and worried about her new riding location. But, after a while, she sees that it might not be so bad after all.
The illustrations were cute and colorful; they had a watercolor quality that was quite soothing and enjoyable. The rendering of the dogs came out especially nice.
HAPPENSTANCE FARMS: A NEW HOME by S. McMichael was a great kids picture book that would be great for new reader as well as more experienced child readers. The horses are a huge draw to the book and the pictures and words are great for drawing a reader in!
