Been rather busy so review delayed by a couple of days.
This is the coming of age for this action adventure series. Originally published in Feb 2009 it has a modern style but is written about early tradecraft in 1950’s. This makes it more contemporary with early James Bond and it has a similar feel.
The assassin her is Anna Fehrbach in the employ of the CIA and former spy for the British in World War II. Still closely linked with MI6 as she lives in a British territory and clearly appears to be a liability if caught and made to reveal her former employer’s working relationship. She is still in a relationship with her former wartime controller who recognised their love but a certain inequality in status and net wealth.
So what is a man to do.
This makes for a very interesting twist on the usual secret agent tale. The action is lethal and the threat to Anna ever present.
This a great thriller with action staged in Mexica, USA and South America. Anna’s life is threatened as never before as the Russians have placed a contract on her via the Mafia in Chicago. They are ruthless and work to a code of honour. The problem for Anna is they efficiently track her down and place her and her dependents and loyal staff at great risk if they attack the islands where she has previously lived in peace and security.
A great storyteller with a wide grasp of history. Nicole brings a plot laced with danger and ill intent where you start to wonder what price Anna may pay for her lack of ruthlessness. She’ll kill the guilty and those that threaten her life but the world is changing. As is said in the narrative; you can’t just go around killing everyone even if they deserve to die. So, the book poses the continued dilemma that friend can turn to foe in the blink of an eye but perhaps even that is too slow to deal with a problem like Anna.
Tense, believable and with a strong female protagonist whose killer looks are just that. Those who underestimate her usually fail to recognise their fatal error; but it is hard to think with a bullet between your eyes.
