For his birthday, Edward, Baron Rycliffe, and his wife Katherine plan a celebratory tournament of knights. As a general rule, I am not a big fan of Menage books. There are very few that I have liked and would consider a part of my "keeper shelf".
For one thing, I have to believe that there is some kind of reasonable explaination for a couple to consider inviting another person into their bedroom. In my opinion, there should always be an emotional element to it too. The characters must care enough about one another to make it work and last...after all, it's just not all about the sex act in general for me.
Having said this, I really enjoyed A Knight For All. I was hesitant to buy it at first, but because I really like Shawn's other books...I figured I would bite the bullet and give this one a try. I am glad I did.
Edward and Gregory have been friends for years. Practically growing up together, they have experienced many joys and heartaches together. So it was only natural for them to expand their relationship to a physical one. Since homosexual acts and love is forbidden, they have always had to hide their affection and lust from one another.
As time went by, both had other goals for their lives. Edward has always wanted a family, whereas Gregory wanted adventure.
When Edward met Katherine, a beautiful widow, he was immediately smitten with her. Soon they fell in love with one another, but there was something always missing in their relationship.
Katherine is definately a woman ahead of her time. Her relationship with her first husband was very unique (you'll have to read it to see what I am talking about) and she is very open minded about much in life. She is a woman who loves with her whole heart, and wants her husband to be as happy as possible, not just content within their marriage. She has suspected that there was more to Edward and Gregory's relationship that meets the eye.
So to give Edward the best birthday present he has ever had, she comes up with an idea...an idea that she hopes will change their lives forever.
I really enjoyed this book and although it's a short story, the storyline, pacing and character development was well written and I thoroughly liked it.
If you are offended by M/M, M/F and M/M/F sex, this book is not for you.

A Knight for All is a medieval m/m/f erotic romance. Edward and Katherine are happily married, and in love with each other. But Katherine senses that there's a part of Edward that longs for something more. She seizes the opportunity and invites Edward's old friend, Gregory, to an upcoming tournament that's being held in celebration of Edward's birthday. Edward, unaware that Katherine had sent Gregory a note, sends Gregory his own note, wishing to see his old friend during the tourmament.
I really liked this book. I think Shawn Lane did an excellent job setting up the menage to make it believable to the time period and the characters. Katherine's not an innocent young miss - she was previously married (her husband since died in battle and she then married Edward). And the circumstances of her previous marriage exposed her to unconventional ideas. I liked how Edward and Katherine were in love - it wasn't a case of Katherine wanting to bring Gregory into the picture to save their marriage, but rather to enhance their marriage. And what I really liked most about this book was that it wasn't one of those usual menages - the ones with 2 men who are, for all intensive purposes gay, and who find that one woman who 'completes' them. Instead, the focus is on Edward, not Katherine. The plot is about his wife offering him the opportunity to be not only with the woman his loves, but the man he loves as well.

This should be historic romance set in middle ages. It was, because author said it was in middle ages, do not doubt that! I think it was only because author had fetish for some old English words and wanted to use it as many as possible. Seriously the story is plane porn from the first page to the last and one must admit that it was very spicy porn. Threesomes are not my favorite, but here it is pleasantly perverted if you count on the lack of hygiene typical for the era of tournaments and crusades. Yuck.
Edward and Gregory have been friends for years, their roads parted, when first born son of nobleman, Edward, had to take his duties seriously and Gregory, the third son of some backwater nobleman was having fun in arm to hire business. Edward married witty widow, who easily put two and two together after she was instructed in the art of menage by her previous very gay husband and his lover. She liked it and when she sensed opportunity to restore happy smexing in her bedroom she went on it. Boys agreed and fun begun. Nobody had problem with it, no morals, nothing pretty modern approach for the time when witches were burnt on the stakes and crusades were common fun.

From the description, I was very excited to read a medieval, semi-realistic story of a permanent menage relationship where all three partners enjoyed and loved each other. Overall, the story did not disappoint and as a fan of medieval romance and bisexual/MMF stories, this book fills a gap that few others address.
Overall, the story and the writing did not blow me away, but the characters, plot and steam all were sure and steady enough to make for a very enjoyable read.

It's been a while since I read a menage story that included a woman. It was a nice although more PWP than a romance.
