Wyrd Science is a magazine dedicated to things like roleplaying games, tabletop games, board games, etc. Here at Volume 1, Issue 1, titled “Session Zero”, we find ourselves back in February 2021. There’s aspects talking about the transition of tabletop games into online games, due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. There’s talk of a podcast, and some articles about tabletop games to look into. We have opinion pieces about a variety of different gaming related topics. There’s information about products.

I so far have copies of issues 1, 2 and 3 from volume 1 via Itch.io bundles that I have purchased over the years. Reading through the magazine, it’s interesting to read about other people’s opinions on the topics available. Admittedly, I wouldn’t think of it as fascinating, but it does serve as an alright thing to read to pass the time.

A key thing I do appreciate is that they try and get a variety of perspectives on gaming; there’s talk of queer additions to gaming, looking into gaming in several different countries, a bit of discussion on what gaming was like decades ago, and what it can be like for women, etc. There’s some good graphics to go along with a lot of the articles; things like illustrations, and even photographs of stuff like tabletop miniatures.

Overall, it’s an quite alright publication. If you have an interest in this kind of thing, and you’re looking to read a bit about the field, you might enjoy it. I might read more of the series in future.

Grab bag of essays and interviews dealing with tabletop gaming. Mostly written during the pandemic lockdowns, it's a bit of a time capsule today, just two years after its publication. Worth the read.

An excellent magazine with a number of interesting articles & interviews from a diverse range of RPG game developers & writers. I found a couple of new games that I'm going to try & the magazine is great for the casual gamer (such as myself) as it gives a taste of several different gaming styles & genres.
