Barely surviving the return of an ancient rival, the soldier of the Devastation rushes to rally new allies against the return of that ancient war. Yet there is fiendish treachery at work, long-held grudges to overcome, and a festering hatred bent on unmaking the victories the Wingnuts and so many other G.R.U.N.T.s sacrificed everything to achieve.
This book takes on a very interesting fantasy story, one which inlcudes all the "normal" tropes of magic, magi-tech, souls, gods and so one, but gives them all quite a new spin that I found most interesting to read.
Throughout the book you have that innate sense of hurry, where the characters always have that one more fire to put out, that one more crises to stop, leading to you finding it hard to break the concentration in reading the book.
All throughout it you get to follow the story of wildly different characters that through many adventures and dangerous situations learn to trust and work with eachother. People that you never normally would image could ever get along with one another due to their personal believes, but through a shared and common goal and purpuse manage to find common ground and a way to work together that they learn to not only tolerate each other, but actively care for and rely upon each other. At the same time yielding a story that is heartwarming and wretching, with many a tense moment thrown in, that from time to time are then defused by a little bit of humour and genious work with the tension of the story.
The book also features a really well written gender-fluid person, and the book is overall written in a way that at the same time as it acknowledges the gender stereotypes and constructs of it that exists in our society, also makes fun of them, as they are silly. A quality I always appreciate to find in literature. :)
Yes, this is a very nice story that gives you something a little bit different of a fantasy story, whilst at the same time staying true to all of the tropes that make a good fantasy story, and I daresay, that if you pick up this book and decide to read it, you most definitely won't regret it. :)
