On Behalf of Death - A Compendium of the First Three Volumes

Rate this book
The first three books in the humorous On Behalf of Death series, featuring Cal Thorpe as Death's marketing agent; Death, as himself; Life, as herself; and Yolanda the rock troll as Cal's assistant.

Book The Innocence of DeathI met Death in the park. And then he offered me a job…

My name is Cal Thorpe and I worked for the premier marketing firm as a marketing and public relations agent. Then, I met Death. He gave me two go back to the moment when I’d been shot or work for him as his marketing agent. Obviously, I took the job.

The only thing is, working for Death was absolutely nothing like I expected. For one, my assistant is a rock troll named Yolanda who smiles a lot and has a penchant for salt. Then, there’s the fact that I have to interview assassins who work with Death to get a sense of the guy. Oh, and finally? Death is married to Life and she’s accusing him of murder.

Death says he didn’t do it.

Now it’s up to me to go and solve this impossible crime, taking me on a trip through the magical realm of Elsewhere, and back to the mortal realm of Earth, to track down a killer who outsmarted Death. The only question is what is going to happen if I actually find the culprit. I have a feeling things will never be the same again.

Book Knowledge AforethoughtActing as relationship counselor for Life and Death was not in my job description. Then, I got sent back in time to fix the problems before their relationship fractured apart…

My name is Cal Thorpe, and I work for Death as his marketing agent. Mediating between Death and Life’s marriage was never in my job description. I did my best until we met up with Death’s cousin, Time, at the theatre. Time decided I should try and fix the problems between Life and Death before they started, so he sent me backwards.

I ended up in Florence in 1494, right in the middle of the Renaissance. And one of the first people I met while there? Niccolo Machiavelli.

Add in a half-giantess named Charlotte, her time travelling journalist companion, and the fact that Death lost my soul and nothing about that trip began as I expected. Still, I had a job to do, and if I ever wanted to get back to the future, I needed to fix the problem before it even started.

Things, naturally, went downhill from there.

Book A Party of Certainties

My name is Cal Thorpe. Death lost my soul. Now I have to borrow a new one…

After losing my soul, I won the temporary use of Al Capone’s soul in a poker game. Then, I could finally get back to normal, doing things like my marketing job, planning Death’s family reunion, and throwing a stuffed pepper into the face of The Taxman. As reparation, I—with Al Capone as a ride along—have to do a job for the Taxman as reparation.

That job? Getting a fetch turned mobster to pay his back taxes. In Chicago.

Now I’m carrying around the soul of a dead mobster with a grudge against The Taxman while trying to unfreeze the fetch’s finances by reconciling him with his not-quite-ex wife, outrunning the Feds, and getting killed more than once by rogue wish magic.

Unable to die and stuck with Al Capone’s soul whispering in my ear? Naturally, things go downhill from there…

Evelyn Grimald “E.G.” Stone is an independent author, editor, and linguist who has been writing, creating and causing vast amounts of trouble since a young age. When not writing, she is off musing about the workings of languages—both real and created—or reading and sewing. E.G. reads voraciously, much to the confusion of her two dogs and two cats. Weird, nerdy, perhaps a little crazy, she is having a grand old time writing, reading, editing, musing on language, and, naturally, continuing her endeavours in causing trouble.
