Hindi Nangyari Dahil Wala sa Social Media: Interogasyon ng Kulturang New Media sa Pilipinas

Rate this book
This exciting collection gathers scholars and activists to exfoliate the complex layered dynamics of social media in the contemporary Philippines. From affective surges of desire, hopes and outrage in celebrity culture to the itinerant flows of dangerous (dis)information in the service of political manipulation and surveillance, Filipino social media culture is a panoramic and capacious vantage from which to mount a serious critical analysis and attain profound understanding of the country's travails and struggles.

This is probably the first book I've seen that gives space for the study of Digital Spaces most especially in the context of the Philippines. I genuinely think we're behind on digital exploration but the topics here are curated considering all aspects that digital new media has touched on. Castillo's digital placemaking of the nuances of Alter accounts is my particular favorite as it emboldens desire happening in transitory spaces. Another I particularly liked was Tolentino's wrapping up of "Hindi Nangyari Dahil Wala sa Social Media" challenging assumed and accepted realities. How Tolentino's article delved into neoliberalism, privatization, and communicative capitalism just launches the need for more review on digitalization in the Philippines.
