This is a completely adorable story! I loved the cats (they were very obviously written by someone who has been or currently is owned by at least one cat!). The language was a bit stilted at times but as the author was born in Germany, this is not so strange and the strangeness (at times) of the language actually made the book work even better! Great story, definitely recommended to all cat lovers!

Jack

This was a book for all you cat lovers. Little Jack was a good mystery detective and Moo Moo helped, too. I liked the way the book was written in and about cats on their level. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

The Adventures of Jack the Cat is memorable amongst many great reads this year. I was grateful to review this book through Reedsy. It tells the story of Jack, a cat who protects the rights of the homeless cats on his street. When food is stolen and, later, spoilt, Jack begins to investigate what is going on, getting to know others along the way. There’s Gina, the healer who sacrifices to give to others, Azrael the conspiracy theorist, MooMoo, the seemingly spoilt once street car with a wealth of intelligence, and Nina, the wise old leader. . Thumbs and the fox are villains in the tale, but while Thumbs is driven by ambition, the fox is lost, blood thirsty and trapped in streets he does not enjoy. Buddy and Churchill as well as the Shadows also play a role in the story.

This is a story which can resonate in many levels, with readers taking out a range of different insights based on their life experiences and the insights of the times. Amongst other tales, it is a story of community, determination and power. It’s a story which takes readers beyond stereotypes, explores cruelties and shows how political battles for power often involve divisions, conspiracy theories and trapping marginalised or wounded individuals to carry out dreadful tasks with a promise of a better life. This is also a simple story of good people coming together to fight ‘bad’ and the role of compassion in understanding how to cope with chaos, disability age and other marginalisations.

This is a story I would recommend for people of all ages. Children would enjoy watching Jack, the cat detective unravel a mystery while older people would take out the satirical or metaphorical elements of the tale. Ultimately, Jack the Cat is a hero on multiple levels and worth multiple reads. The ending leaves me hopeful that there will be another story. It also shows us that no matter how many problems we might resolve, there will never be a utopia. There ks always another problem to solve.

The story idea was good, but the execution left a lot to be desired. Lots of grammar mistakes, odd tense changes, and too much repetition of Jack’s inner dialogues. The book definitely needed an editor. No spoilers, but the ending had a glaring omission, something that Jack should have done, based on all his previous behavior, but didn’t.

I have seen people call this cozy, suitable for children. It is neither. I found the whole story distressing. The character of the fox, especially, was primal and violent, and there were some scenes with him that were simply disgusting. Realistic, perhaps, for a wild animal, but not enjoyable to read. The stakes for the cat community were high, and they were in constant peril. Not an enjoyable read at all. If revised with an editor’s help, it might be ok.

I listened to the AI narrated audio version. It was odd and flat. I won’t use AI narration for anything again.

This was an odd read for me and I’m unsure how to review it. It’s a book about street animals. From the view point of Jack the cat and the struggle of finding food as a street animal and hate for humans. This book reminded me of a cat mafia mixed with Sherlock Holmes in the smallest way. I tried to go outside of my comfort zone with this one and was slightly disappointed that I did not like it the way I did. But I do wonder now what street cats really think.

Imagination

An interesting exercise in the imagination. Cat behavior was so true to their nature. Poor editing or translation but not bothersome; just filled in the blanks.

It was a really fun read. The editing should be a bit better, but it was still very enjoyable and creative. Looking forward to more adventures with Jack. It was great that the author shared his real life cats that made it better
